So past 2 days I have cleaned up some pee of the ground which is unusual for our girls but we also have babies that are still learning so I have no clue which bun it was. But while cleaning I noticed the pee darker than usal and my boyfriend who just cleaned a puddle said there was a bit of red but to me it looked like an orange brown. Should I be concerned as I looked it up and saw rabbits could just be on there period but then there was another thing that said cancer which are 2 very widely separate things. Does anyone know what could be going on? I am making a vet appointment just in case but if it’s more urgent than I want to take them to the emergency vet asap

Rabbit urine can indeed be orange, and even very dark orange. If you have concerns about blood, you can put a few drops of hydrogen peroxide in the pee puddle and if it fizzes violently, that’s an indicator there’s likely blood in there, which is a cause for concern.

Take a look here for the healthy range of pee color and what may cause it: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Urine

Also, please note that if you have two unspayed girls together, 1) there is always a chance of mis-sexing, which may lead to accidental pregnancy and 2) young rabbits form “baby bonds”, which are typically temporary bonds formed due to the lack of hormones. As they approach puberty, their hormones may lead to fights, so it is recommended to separate young rabbits sooner, rather than later, to prevent negative interactions and maintain the separation until they are ideal candidates for starting bonding (i.e., at least 1mo post-spay/-neuters). You can read more about rabbit bonding in the RABBIT INFO section of BinkyBunny!

Rabbit pee can vary a lot in color, so I don’t think you should worry based on what you’ve described. It’s common for them to have more orange or red pee due to variation in diet. The urine can also get darker when it sits longer. When there is blood in urine it will be little droplets of blood, rather than uniformly red. If you aren’t sure you can try testing some with a little hydrogen peroxide, which will fizz up if there is any blood. I’m not sure where you read that rabbits get a period but I don’t believe that is correct.

Orange pee is perfectly normal. If it has been sitting for awhile, enough to start evaporating, it can start to look even darker because it is becoming more concentrated.

Yes, I agree with others and LBJ10… I once was worried about dark brown urine and ended up seeing my bun wee a light yellow which I thought was odd so I waited a little while before cleaning it up and it indeed turned bown! So it was definitely an oxidation/evaporation thing…. I even had the vet send off his urine to the labs for testing before I realised it was just changing colour lol
