› FORUM › DIET & CARE › Are lops usually overweight looking?
Drue looks a bit overweight. When he sits and eats it looks almost like a roll and when I pet him he’s just really fluffy and I’m not sure if it’s that he’s got fluffy fur or if he’s a chubster. He doesn’t seem to eat all that much so far except LOTS and lots of hay. However; he doesn’t do all that much. The woman at the rescue said he’d be a bit tired at first because he’s not used to getting exercise..so maybe once he starts moving around more he’ll slim down.
i think you just asked and answered your own question ;o)
once he gets on a good diet and start exploring more, he should lose some weight if he is overweight. the vet will be able to tell you if it’s even necessary… i got the feeling that Max was huge, but it was just b/c he was bigger than Mead.
LOL yea I probably did.
I just I dunno..he’s got a completely different body structure then Tucker so it throws me off a bit. Tucker’s got very smooth fur and her body is what it is lol. Drue is fluffernutter hair and it’s really hard to tell what’s him and what’s just fluff.
But I can see why he would be chubby if he is lol. He gets up nibbles on his straw mat for a few minutes and then flops over again. It’s hard work being a bun!
sigh…. i know. we should all have to work so hard…
lolz…I can remember having Mimzy for about a month and my daughter saying, “Putting on a little weight, are you bun?”
She got the MAJOR stink eye! >_> And that was just from Mimzy!
He does look a little ‘shorter’ than my other two bunnies. Like his body construction is just not as lanky as theirs. But oddly enough, it’s my daughter’s lionhead that is the chunky one. She is part palomino and that makes her prone to heaviness. She was also eating too many pellets, not getting enough exercise and her favorite hay was wheat, very high in calories.
Even little Fiver, my mini-rex, is filling out quite nicely. He seemed a little on the skinny side when i first got him. He’s only three pounds though, so he can’t be getting fat. 0_o Or can he?
Eh…I I had a bunny’s energy I wouldn’t have the thighs of a 45 year old woman. >.< Have you ever seen Drue binky or do much of any kind of moving about? As large as Pip (my daughter's bunny) is (about 5-6 pounds easy) she can still launch that body into the air so that her ears are level with the top of the xpen. 0_0 Quite a sight to see!
Nope I haven’t seen a binky yet but I also haven’t really seen him out and about much yet. He never ventured out of his condo today at all so maybe tomorrow!! I’m planning on bringing him upstairs with me to work so that he can have some run time up there and Tucker can have some run time down here.
Oh wait ..I just saw a half binky. It was more of a head shake and front arm twist..but hey a bun’s only got so much space in a condo so I’d say that’s a good start!
Not used to big buns especially lops I thought HB was chunky too. HE has slimmed down some. Now he looks to thin as compared to his previously round self.
I check out some sites for french lops and they are supposed to be round so I guess he wasn’t overweight after all.
Well, the Holland Lops that I’ve known do seem cobbier than other rabbits. I think it’s partly their smushed up face and their ears just make them boxier looking and they also seem to have shorter legs – it’s all just probably an illusion though.
Well I thought my lop was putting on weight so I took him to the vet to get weighed and he’d lost weight and the vet thought I was starving him! I just can’t tell with my lops so good luck. They just seem so round and fluffy ![]()
how is Drue eating? does he still seem overweight or are you used to his size now?
Well now that he lets me pet him I’ve realized he is just very fluffy! So it’s mostly just his fur, I don’t think he’s actually overweight now ![]()
I’m going to agree and say lops do look chubbier, they have wider faces and bodies it seems. Once he gets settled in and starts exercising he’ll look healthier!!
I have heard minilops referred to as “The bulldogs of the bunny world”, and it’s true. They are short, squat, and have wide flat faces. I originally didn’t want a lop, because I didn’t think they “looked like rabbits”. But Pepper picked me and that was that!
After 2 years with her, I have to say that now uppy-eared buns look pointy and nervous to me! All those flicky ears!
People always used to remark that “wow – she’s big!” but she’s really only 6.5 lbs. The rest is floof. She looked really sad and tiny the time she decided to jump in the (full) bathtub to investigate.
You have better luck judging their weight by feel if this is the case – if they feel compact and muscular when you hold them, then they are fine. If they dont’ go “in” a little at the waist, they are probably a bit chubby, and if you can feel all the ribs then they are too skinny. Pepper lost almost a full pound when her pasteurella first manifested, and she felt all bony and skinny and her fur was dull and patchy.
Well…the question begs asking….
Do these pix make my bun look fat?? 0_o

Aaw, Mimz is a ‘lop or not’, he’s just cute as a button! I love the 1st picture, it’s so cute…and he looks a bit like an evil bunny in the 2nd one plotting world domination (probably he’s been in touch with Maryann).
It’s odd, the kids were always joking about how plump he got after coming home with us. I never thought about it till lately.
He was so tiny at first, not as big as a minute. And his ‘points’ were definitely more obvious. Now he’s kind of ‘blended together’.
And you can see, he has achieved one-ness with his nommies. ^_^
Yes, he seems mischievous. But he is my best behaved bunny. It is Pip who has an anarchists’ cookbook under her litterbox. xD
HB looked like the 2 buns on the bottom of your post Mimzmum. I thought he was too fat. I fed him less and he looked too skinny. So I feed him the right amount for an 8 lb bunny. He has gained his weight back and looks normal.
Oh Honey Bunny is the lop ear in my signature. I thought lops didnt’ look natural either. Then I kept seeing Bailey and other lops and took a liking to the way they look. Lionheads are my fav first and lops after angora’s. I love tlops big fat faces.
He will go the vet Dec. and get all checked over. Ruby is going in Nov.
Yea Drue looks like Mimzy does. I love their chubbiness LOL Especially when Drue does his flops. He looks like my big dog Sammi…all fluffy and round.
That’s funny, when Mimzy flops he actually gets quite flat. That’s when I can see his breathing best and it looks like he has no tummy at all…so I can’t imagine he is plump, he simply knows how to scrunch himself all up.
Also, as long as I can feel ribs, I am not too worried. And, having been a postal worker at one time, I can fell weights pretty well. Even Pip seems to have come down in weight since I posted about how heavy she was. So I think we’re all good.
Now, if I could just get Fiver to let me hold him so I can judge his weight, but he’s not having any of it. >.<
