I’ve been trying to treat Fiver’s sore hock problems with either Neosporin or the PAd Guard my vet gave me, but I’m not satisfied with the results.

When I was having radiation treatments, I was recommended to use an ointment called Aquaphor. It’s very expensive but works beautifully to help keep moisture in the skin and soothe broken or chapped tissues. It is a base of petrolatum 41% plus mineral oil, ceresin, lanolin alcohol, panthenol, glycerin & bisabolol.

What I like about it is, it really sticks to the affected surface. Doesn’t wash off easy and keeps things nice and smooth while it soaks in. It’s sticky though, like most petroleum jelly products and will probably pick up all sorts of stuff as he walks about. But would it be bad to use on Fiver’s heels? The Neosporin tends to wipe off right off the bat and the Pad Guard dries too soon before I can get it on him. Could I use the Aquaphor to help his little footies? He needs something on there that will stay long enough to be effective. And with the 0.000010th of a second that I have to actually get something on him before he flips out and runs away, I need something that works.

Hmm, I have not heard of Aquaphor before – are those ingredients you mentioned similar to what is in neosporin? I think you posted about Calendula oil before, have you succeeded in finding it? have you tried that on the sore hocks?

I tried to google it but I couldn’t find anything about it – only some sites that appeared to have results of Aquaphor being tested on rabbits and my husband wouldn’t let me read them (because he knew it would probably be upsetting, so I’d probably recommend NOT googling that…)

Good Lord! *tosses jar* Is there NOTHING in the world that hasn’t been tested on rabbits??

Sorry Moo…didn’t mean to cause you any distress. Please apologize to your husband for me also.

Sorry Mimz I don’t know…I did find an article on HRS today don’t know if you’ve read it-it calls for tea bag compresses?? That may help! http://www.rabbit.org/journal/3-2/foot-problems.html

Also I’ve read several times that any products that are safe for horses are safe for rabbits…Do you have a ‘tack’ store/horse store near you? I wonder if that thing you have is ok for horses….*off to search the internet again*

i used aquaphor on my son when he was born (dry skin).

i don’t know what the ingredients are but i know it’s more of a cream than an ointment like neosporin.

i just noticed that Mead’s one hock is looking bad again… it’s just one of those mini rex things…

what if you draped a small hand towel over his head so he couldn’t see, held him like that and secured the back end. would you be able to put a dab of the ointment on it and and blow on it for a minute?

I’ve used Silvadene before and it works well. You would have to get it from the vet though.

I asked my vet for Silvadene, but she gave me the Pad Guard instead.

No, Beka, he is a terribly frightened bunny. No matter how much I try to calm him and let him know I mean him no harm, he WILL NOT put up with being held without the kind of scene I described in the end of the “Unusually Cuddly” thread. I am afraid he’d flip out so bad he’d keel over from a heart attack. But at the same time, I don’t want those heels to start bleeding. I’m thinking it’s the dry air here. It’s making everything crack.

He still goes like stink over the bed during his out time. They can’t be hurting him, but they don’t look pretty.

I had to use the Aquaphor ointment during my radiation treatments to help the burned skin keep from hurting. It was wonderful stuff, but I look at it now knowing how they tested it and I can’t feel so good about it anymore. >_<

You had radiation therapy. OH my.  My husband opted out for his. He had lymphoma.  The chemo worked well and the radiation would really pull a hard one on him and  kill is saliva gland and burn his throat.  He chose not to.

Unfortuantely a little blip of cancer showed up on his last mri.  He will go agian in Dec. I hope it isn’t bigger.  Those decisions are hard decisions and you just have to do your best.

                      You feeling better now?

Yep that dry air dries my nose right up and my face too.  Poor rex bun. Can you get someone else to put the stuff on his foot?  Throw a towel over his head and get it on there?  That way he can trust you and not the person putting the stuff on?

Oh BT, my prayers go out to you and your hubby. I hope they take a look at it and it turns out to be nothing. My best friends’ brother-in-law had it but he came out okay, chemo and radiation and all. I think he went in for some other complaint and they just happened to find the cancer, he got lucky with that.

I am fine. I’ve been in remission for three, almost four years. God has been good to me.
I looked funny with my radiation burn. Made me look like a beagle with one big brown spot on my chest and neck…lolz.

The other night I’d had my son help me with Fiver, but it took a long time and a lot of chasing around to get hold of him and get him calmed enough to hold still and get the ointment on. I keep hoping I can just sneak up on him and dab it on while he’s not looking, but it’s really hard. He is a terrified bunny when it comes to being held or touched in any way.
