My bunnies love apple branches, and I was thinking of trying soaking popsicle sticks in apple juice and then drying them in my food dehydrator on low so they dry quickly from both sides (top and bottom).  I know that I can easily find no sugar added pure apple juice- but what should I look for in the popsicle sticks?  it seems like craft sticks don’t say what wood they are made out of or if they are treated, etc.

What has everyone else used?  And do bunnies really like these?  I think I saw that these were included in the “christmas bags for shelter bunnies” campaign that I read about on bunspace.com.  Any ideas other than popsicle sticks?

My bunnies are seriously obsessed with their apple sticks/branches- they chew all the bark off immediately.  Thank goodness my Grandmothers farm has an apple orchard and the trees need to be trimmed anyway.  I bring home pillowcases of branches, let them dry and them cut them into smaller 6 inch pieces or so.  I have never read if there is a limit or not on giving apple branches. Of course if you don’t have access to apple trees the price alone will limit you!

When Binky Bunny gets Willow bundles back in stock- I want to try those for my bunnies!

i think some people have boiled the sticks in the juice. you have to be careful that the sticks don’t splinter when they’re chewed on, and i think you have to watch b/c they can develop mold if unused…

Yup mold and splinters-other then that I’ve heard they really like them. The only thing I’ve done is offer a nibble of a popsicle stick after I ate the popsicle. They really seemed to like it so, soaked in apple juice would probably be a big hit!

I bought some large popsicle sticks locally and then found out they are made from birch (which some sites say online is bunny safe) and the company does not recommend giving them to animals or using them for human use.

It can be really hard to find out what some of these sticks are made of. These I bought from a craft store untreated.

I had to contact the popsicle stick makers and easily got the info of what they are made from. The sticks I bought were from Michaels Craft Store. I have gotten large popsicle sticks from other places I have used in the past that have been safe for use but this company specifically says not to use for animals/humans.
