Anyone Know Anything About Publishing?

Hello, all!

 I was talking to my mom today about how cute Humphrey would be as an illustration/etc, and eventually we started talking about how his story of abandonment and rescue would make a really sweet and ultimately, very informative children’s book. I do actually draw (not professionally, but well enough), and I started to think that writing a Humphrey book would be a wonderful idea (and I would love to see if there was some way the profits could go to local shelters and/or the HRN). So I was wondering, does anyone know anything about publishing and/or know any publishers? The writing department at my school is more focused on publishing adult works, so while I suppose I could ask one of those professors I’m (a) at home for the week and (b) not actually a creative writing major, so I figured I’d ask around here, first. n___n

That’s a great idea! I don’t know anything about publishing but I would go ahead and talk to your writing department. I’m sure they can give you some advice.

Kathy Smith who published “Rabbit Health in the 21st Century” and “King Murray, an Easter Bunny’s Tale” (I think that’s the name of that book) used this company to publish her books.  Also I believe Chandra Beals who wrote “The Relaxed Bunny:  Massage for your Pet Bunny” published her book through them.

yea!!! finally something I can contribute! I’ve been a commercial artist for over 30 years, working in printshops and publishing houses most of that time. Right now I work for a company illustrating textbooks, webmistress, graphic design, signage, etc. and I’d be more than happy to help you put it together. I’ve helped several children’s book authors/artists put their layouts together, both for traditional press printing (very expensive) and for on-demand printing where you wind up with a pdf you can take to a digital printshop and have as few or many as you want done. Or an ebook on line.

I’d be glad to donate the time to return some of the wonderful help I’ve received from the members here 😉

Lola has turned into a wild woman! She finally braved the ramp I built for the condo and after watching Daisy go in and out for several days, she popped out Saturday night and spent all day Sunday going in and out. She pretty much sits in the condo by the open door, but now when she sees me in the kitchen she hops down and comes in to sit by the fridge til I remember it’s time for greens! She does this long binky all across the room now and Daisy just stares and goes ‘damn, woman’.

i think thats a great idea! maybe you could gather a lot of rabbit rescue stories and put it into one book. that would be a good idea too! Good luck with your pursuit!

Another option is to look into self publishing through lulu.com It’s a neat website and doesn’t cost the author anything – it only costs for the people who purchase your book. One of the members of one of my livejournal bunny group did a wonderful book and all the proceeds went to rabbit rescues.

I would even bet that you local HRS shelter wold be willing to help sell or promote the book, especially if you were donating profits!

Goodness gracious! Thanks for the big response! n___n Kralspace, I’d love to talk to you when I actually have some illustrations done– I was about to start today when, of all things, my tablet (for those who don’t know, it’s like a pen that attaches to the computer so you can draw on screen/etc instead of having to scan everything in) decided to stop working today. XD I went looking for a new one, but all the Wacom ones are so darned expensive that I just decided to suck it up and order one through ye olde interwebz. And of course you guys would get a preview! I’d probably just have to post the pictures small-sized to avoid issue with copyright/plagiarism.

So yeah, unfortunately plans are sort of on hold until my new tablet comes, which may not be for a couple of weeks. Foiled! Foiled again! >___<

That’s such a sweet idea. It’s great that you can use your skills/talent to help the bunnies. I just gave blood at the farmer market and I thought that was great. But your idea is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy better!!
