Anyone in South Florida want a bun?

 Hello! I hope that this is the correct place to post this topic. I found a lost rabbit wandering around a neighborhood here in South Florida. I have put up flyers and an ad on Craigslist but have not been able to find the owner. The bunny is very sweet, affectionate, and well socialized, so I assume that he was somebody’s pet. His only problem is that he HATES being picked up. Other than that he is as nice as can be.

I can’t keep him because I am in a one bedroom apartment and already have several pets. My mom adores him but works too much to give him proper attention. I’m giving the owners one more week to contact me and after that I’m going to find him a home. My questions are:

1. Does anybody know of any other creative ways of trying to find the owner of this bun?

2. Do any of you binkybunny member in SoFlo want another bun?  I would be willing to drive him as far north as West Palm and as far south as the mid Florida Keys.

3. If I can’t find him a home, are there are any bunny rescues/shelters in SoFlo that would be willing to take him in? Obviously a place with a no-kill policy that could find him a nice, loving home.

We don’t typically allow rehoming posts on the website, just for the fact that we would get inundated with them constantly. Instead we focus on helping people find solutions so they can keep their rabbits. Your situation is different tho since this isn’t your rabbit, and I’m so happy you were able to catch him! He would have surely suffered an unfortunate fate if left out on his own much longer. Chances are he didn’t just escape. People release their unwanted pet rabbits all the time and they either do not survive, or they contribute to the problem of feral domestic rabbits.

So in your case, I would focus on trying to find a new home, preferably there is someone you know who would be interested in him, this way you can keep tabs on him. If not, be aware that it can take months to find a suitable home for a rabbit, even listing ads. If you go that route, be sure to ask a fee for him. Free rabbits end up being acquired by people looking for “feeders”.

You will probably not have much luck with a shelter. They are already overrun by unwanted animals. If they do agree to take him, remember there is a chance he may be euthanized if space becomes an issue.

I don’t recommend Craigslist to find homes for rabbits though…I tried this once and got a reply from a breeder – I also find that people are more impulsive on Craigslist when searching for pets.

I’m familiar with the SOFL area, and I’d first recommend taking him to the Ft. Lauderdale Wildlife Care Center. They usually list over 40 rabbits available for adoption.
You can try contacting Luv-A-Bunny rabbit rescue also, but last I read she was filled up since she only has foster networks, not an actual shelter location.
Finally you can look up H.A.R.E. house rabbit adoption and rescue. It’s got a website with links. Dana Krempels is part of that edu org.
