When i was opening my new cage box i got a few things, like a food bowl (that went stright in the bin) a drinker (good size hope it does not leak) and a bag of litter called “Back-2-Nature”   it offers odor control and has a rabit on the front of the package.  the reason I ask is that i give my guys hay in thie litter tray and they don’t really touch it, they perfer to eat from the hay baskets. so I thought maybe this litter would work since I got it free but not prepared to put it in my cage till i am sure of it.

I just looked it up, their website says its made entirely from recycled paper with no chemicals added, and is naturally organic… so I’d guess it would be safe. It says also that it is safe to flush down toilets,a nd makes good garden mulch, so its not dangerous in gardens and such.

I think I’ve seen this one. They stock it in Big W here. From memory it was a bit pricey.

Well I put a little bit as a layer under the hay and smeel wise it was good, did not switch out the litter trays when I got up (they get done every morning and night because of the smell) left them as they did not smell today and will check them tonight. Will see how I go and see how the cost is, figure out how I go

Did you use a paper litter before? Paper litters are pretty good with odour control. Some of the supermarkets stock them now. Pelleted form and the other type that looks like grey carefresh.

I too was using just newspaper and hay on top…was working well until I noticed little boy pee smell. Blech. I’d like to hear how your pellets work out. I’m trying new things too!

I used the Coles brand one which was good. Then the price kept creeping up. grrrr

In my experience, when you buy cage kits, they give you the more expensive litter so you’ll use it and think this is your ONLY option. Then you have to keep coming back to get more. Definitely price it out, but I always continue to go back to wood stove pellets as the best, most cost-effective litter…

I can’t seem to find a wood stove pellet over here, unless one of the aussie members knows of a brand. i could carefresh which someone said to use but a small bag was $14! This stuff is in fact working really really well. Their eating of hay has not decreased and the smell is 100 times better in my room and since it got over 40 degrees today (don’t worry bunnies had aircon and water bottles and a fan) I think it did a good job

I’ve found things like back 2 nature and carefresh really expensive.

However I use a cheaper alternative which is near enough the same as carefresh called megazorb

you can buy it from http://www.hayexperts.co.uk and i think its brilliant  X especially with my masses of buns haa x

You can also use horse stall bedding. It’s not uncommon to have to travel a bit to get them, but what I did last year was I bought 8 40lb bags, enough to last me a year and I only spent about $50 on 8 bags!!! You can’t beat that price! Even if you have to drive a bit out of your way. Not sure what other litters the Australian members use… (This is also something to keep in mind in case you are getting or fostering a Flemish Giant in the near future. You need something extremely cost-effective!)

Yes, the wood stove pellets aren’t big here but I do think they’re going to become more available in the future. I use a pelleted wood litter caller Woody Pet. (woodypet.com.au). The website used to have a better way to find stockist but looks like you have to send email now. Also there’s a product called Oz-pet. Similar thing and looks to be more readily available. Do be aware of additives in some types though.
Breeders Choice and Coles Reliance paper litters are some other options.

I am using the Horse bedding that Beka talked about right now – I got a HUGE bag for 5 bucks, and it is essentially compressed straw. I throw a little bit of Yesterdays News over the top to please my Diva, but more or less I have found that if I put a scoop of shredded aspen on bottom, the compressed Straw with a sprinkling of the YN on top, I am getting pretty darn good absorption and odor control.

I was worried about the Eco-Straw before I tried it, but I have no hesitations now. Whoo-Hoo for good cheap litter!
