We went to the vet today to have some dental work done for Dusty. He’s been losing weight and not eating so eating so well. The vet thinks it was his teeth so he went in today to have them filed. Our vet said that when she was cleaning his mouth she noticed a pocket on each side of his cheeks which had food stuck in it. She said she has never heard or seen anything like this before. She cleaned the pockets out and the skin was healthy and there were no ulcers in the mouth. She thinks the pockets are not a problem but it’s just not something she’s seen before. Now his teeth are filed she thinks he should start eating properly again.

I was just wondering if anyone on here has any insight on these pockets or if anyone has ever heard of something similar to this before? The vet found carrot in his mouth which i gave to him about 3 days ago which I think is concerning. Maybe I’m worrying over nothing but I would just like to get a better understanding of what this is and if it could cause him any complications down the line.

I don’t know if this makes any differnce but he is also recovering from what the vet believes is syphilis. The poor little guy has been treated for nearly 3 months and it’s finally looking better. He suffers with scabbing around the mouth.

        Sorry for the essay!

If he was having trouble chewing, I think it’s safe to assume that food was becoming trapped in places it doesn’t normally become trapped. I don’t know what you mean by pockets. However, there is a space inside the cheek toward the back… I guess I just wouldn’t really call it a pocket.

I’ve heard syphilis can cause lesions within the mouth, so I wonder if they a remnance of old lesions or sores that -popped- during the medication period, thus healed to a healthy pouch form?

Oh, that’s possible Wick. And then the poorly chewed food found perfect little places to collect.

Thank you Wick and LBJ10 for your relpies. It would definitely makes sense if it was due to lesions in the mouth.

The vet described it as little pockets in his mouth with a cover of skin acting like a lid. I know that sounds odd but i havent seen them so I am struggling to explain it. I’m back in on Thursday so I’ll tell her about the lesions and see if that makes sense to her.

If they are lesions do you think they will heal? Or will he always have these little pockets?

If they are healed lesions, my guess is it will stay there unless the lid gets removed through friction or something. I sort of imagine it’s like what I have, which is lid/flaps on my inner cheek from being cut by orthodontic headgear/braces and such. It’s just a normal, healed flap. It could be a potential place of infection or vulnerability for hay and such to get wedged, so I would ask the vet if it would be worthwhile to remove the lid so it doesn’t catch things in the future.

Yea you’re right. I think it’s definitely work asking about having them removed eventually. I’ll speak to our vet tomorrow.

Poor guy has had it tough with Syphilis and now his teeth. I’d hate to have him get sick from this too.

                    Thanks again for your help
