Any tips on after surgery care?

 Jenner is a little over a year old and getting spayed next week. I’m sure the vet will tell me all of the care guidelines and such, but I was just wondering if you guys have any tips on what to do/not to do.

And how soon after she’s fixed can I continue the bonding process with my other bunny? They’ve already been interacting every day for 15-30 minutes and doing well.

The first week you will want to keep them separated to allow her to help heal.

It usually takes about 48 to 72 hours for females to really start to perk up after the procedure. She most likely will not want to eat once she gets home and the best thing is to not fuss over her and just let her chill out…she will be recovering from the pain meds and the anesthesia. You may notice some mushy poops as well due to the meds, so don’t be alarmed about that.

Make sure the vet gives you some pain medication to take home – it’s usually 2 to 3 days worth.

After a week, I think it would be find to do the short 15 minute interactions as long as she seems alert and acting normal. Many times owners will find their rabbits to be more “hormonal” after the procedure for about a month and that’s normal as their body is adjusting – much like menopause I suppose.

Since they’ve already been interacting and have gotten along pretty well, I agree with Sarita. Depending on how soon she gets back to normal, you’ll be okay to do short sessions after a week or two. Make sure she isn’t stressed out during the sessions, and if he tries to hump her, I would wait until she’s had some more time to heal.

Rabbits need to continue to eat up to the surgery. They don’t need to be fasted beforehand.

Even though I need to wait a week or so before putting the bunnies together, should I still bring her out for her daily running around time and interact with her myself?

You have to wait more than a week to put the bunnies together. Not that “she” is a “he” it won’t be as invasive, but will still need some time. And keep in mind hormones will be going bonkers for a month or so until they die down completely, so you could end up with an aggressive bun for a few weeks. Keep him contained for a few days, no running and playing.

I don’t know the size of her pen or cage but I would wait a few days, and make sure she doesn’t jump up or down as that can cause problems with the internal sutures.
