I was searching online for some antler chews for my dog to try out, and the company also sells small ones for rabbits, guinea pigs, etc…Have any of you ever given your buns antlers?  Here’s what it says:

“Natural shed antler animal chews! Perfect for rabbits, hamsters, gerbils, rats, mice, guinea pigs, and their ever-growing teeth! Not only will it keep there teeth in check, healthy and clean, they will get plenty of rich minerals as well! Chews are 1-4 inches long 15 for $5!!”

Haaa oh my…That’s an example of a company ‘branching out’ for business and not caring if the product is safe I’m sure -I first don’t believe that rabbits would be interested in them, not being omnivores and all, and secondly I don’t think that would be good for them-antlers are hard, and those chips could be swallowed and would be sharp and non digestible. I’d steer clear. (In fact, I’ve seen them for dogs and don’t think they are safe for dogs either, who are built to digest animal protein, but certainly not something similar to bone)

Perhaps we should all email this looney company?

Well that’s certainly something to think about. I’ve never given my dogs antlers, but I know some people who rave about them, especially in the area of keeping their teeth clean. Not sure if they actually eat them, I was just thinking they chew on them, but I will investigate further!

My dog, who has access to many deer antlers since my husband is a hunter, in fact that is where he is as I type, and Maxwell couldn’t care less about them. Antlers are bone. Should rabbits chew on it, I know squrirels do.

Since rabbits are 100% vegetarian I don’t think it would be a good thing for them. It’s like how some companies sell fluffy cotton-like bedding for hamsters and say it’s okay for rabbits too, when it isn’t. Bones also aren’t really safe for dogs either though (why you’re not supposed to feed them meat that could have bones in it, blahblahblah). There really is no way to make sure they don’t ingest any and I know bone shards can cause tears or poke holes in their digestive organs.

Antlers just don’t seem like a natural thing for bunnies to chew on. Wood is much better, if you want to get a chew toy.

Hay provides the necessary chewing for wearing down their teeth. My first thought was that antler chews would not be good for vegetarians. Even in the wild, bunnies chew the wood branches and stalks that hold the greens they like, so they never go near animal product. I would steer clear.

Cool, thanks everyone for your input. Don’t worry, I won’t be giving any to Sunny Buns!

Just wanted to say that even though rabbits can’t have the antlers, these are great for dogs as far as having a chew that is safe(the antlers do not splinter) and lasts a VERY long time.
