Tonight we had to take our rabbit to an emergency vet visit due to a cut on his underbelly and penis. They prescribed antibiotics as a precaution to give him to avoid infection. Is there anything I should give him with the antibiotics to help his tummy stay normal? Would you recommend I give him a probiotic with it at all? I have never had to give him antibiotics so I want to make sure I am doing everything correct to keep him healthy.

Giving a probiotic about an hour after an antibiotic administration is sometimes a recommendation. There is contention in the field if probiotics actually work in rabbits, but there is no harm in doing it. If you can get some infant gas drops (simethicone), this can help alleviate any gas that might come up. Simethicone is safe for rabbits and they can’t really get harmed from an “overdose” or anything like that.

I recommend simply monitoring and if you find there is a major disruption in appetite/poop, let your vet know that this particular antibiotic might be something your rabbit has bad reactions to.

Which antibiotic did they give you?

They gave us Enrofloxacin and silver sulfaduazine to put on the cut.

Decreased appetite is rare with Enrofloxacin. Most rabbits don’t have an digestive problems when taking it, but as Wick said a probiotic wouldn’t hurt anything.

Perfect. That is great to hear. Thank you both. I really appreciate it. I’ve been a wreck today.
