Hi everyone! This is kind of a random question, but I was prescribed a Clindamycin topical lotion by my dermatologist to treat some inflammatory acne on my face. She recommended that I apply a layer to my face morning and night for a few months. I know that rabbits CANNOT have Clindamycin as it can lead to a buildup of toxins in their GI tract. My question is: is it okay for me to use this medication if I wash my hands after I apply it? I guess I’m just worried that I will touch my face and get some of the Clindamycin lotion on my hands and then touch my rabbit, his food, etc. and he will end up investing it. I assume it would take more than that to cause an issue so it will be okay if I wash my hands after I apply it?

          *ingesting, not investing

I think it will be OK. Washing your hands after applying the cream isn’t a bad idea. Don’t let your bunny lick your face. Stuff like that. Honestly though, I doubt trace amounts on your skin are going to pose much danger to your bunny.

That was my thinking as well since it would be difficult for him to ingest large amounts from excess lotion on my hands/face- I know that it’s dangerous if administered orally to rabbits, but of course that isn’t the case here. I’ll just wash my hands after I apply it to be extra cautious. Thank you!

Okay, so after I applied the Clindamycin lotion to my face this morning, I just washed my hands and then did his litter box, refilled his hay/pellets, and gave him his treat. He will probably be totally fine, right?

I’m sure he will be fine. If you are worried, you could wear gloves when you apply the cream. But I really think that is overkill.
