I wanted to share this story of how you shouldn’t purchase a rabbit from a petstore. This girl I work with back around easter wanted to get her daughter a rabbit. I tried talking her into rescue one from a rescue group but she wouldn’t have it she wanted to go to a local petshop. I told her not to go to this petshop because years ago i purchased a rabbit there that died a few days later because it was really sick. So when she went to purchase the rabbit the petshop owner said it was a female because all there males had an M marked in there ear. I had this feeling that this rabbit was a male not a female. Well she didn’t want my advice. So no one where I live would spay the female so they had to travel a half hour to a vet that would spay it. She comes into work tonight and tells me there female is a male. I didn’t want to say I told you so. Her daughter is really upset because she wanted a female and now it is a male. She said theya re still going to keep it. It just shows that this is another reason not to purchase a rabbit from a petstore. My friend told the owner that they wanted a female so of course the pet shop would tell you that they are out to make a sale and could care less about the well fair of the rabbit. Never again will I ever purchase a rabbit from a pet shop or tell anyone to.

I personally don’t care about gender either. When I got my kamdyn from a breeder I didn’t care what it was as long as it was a rabbit. I have a bossy doe rabbit also. It upset me that she asked her daughter well do you want to give it away and get a female. Then they changed her name a bit. Which just treat the rabbit the same. They have loved it this long. Who cares.

I would say it goes to show you should do your research first, and learn how to sex the critter yourself. I know rabbits can be tricky, but it is still a useful skill to have. (Then again, I can sex just about anything but birds.)

Peppy was adopted “free” off Craigslist after wearing out her novelty as an Easter bunny…when we picked her up to take her home, the mom of the two little boys said that she had told her kids Peppy was a boy, even though she knew otherwise. I don’t get why people are so picky…

Neither do I. I think the only time I was choosy about genders was with my geckos so that I could cage them together. Males will fight each other, and you can not put males with females for obvious reasons, unless you want to breed, which I don’t. So I chose mostly female geckos. But other then that I don’t really care about gender. I bought Momo because she was cute and had a black stripe down her back.

I think it is more of a little kid thing than an adult thing. Boys don’t want anything to do with “gross” girls, so it would follow that they would want a boy pet. Same thing goes if the gender is reversed. Not that that should matter, you should teach your children that both genders are equal. But you know how kids get their heart set on something. When I was a kid, I wanted girl hamsters. But that was mostly because the boys would have certain parts touching you when you held them. lol

I totally agree. Even when I was younger I never cared what sex my buns were as long as they were buns. I was picky with sex when i got sunshine because I was bonding her with my other bunny who was a male. So i did want a female for that purpose!

I never cared about what gender my pets were lol and I admit, when I was a kid I did have some pet store pets – but NEVER again, I refuse to buy from pet stores. Glad they did keep it, hopefully the novelty doesn’t wear off and make them want to get rid of it like so many easter bunny pets.

I think it’s a kid thing, too. It’s appalling, though, that the mother asked her daughter if she wanted to get rid of the bunny after finding out it was the “wrong” sex. It’s sickening when parents indicate to their children that animals are as disposable as last year’s fashions. My brother and sister-in-law are this way. Their kids have had several dogs already, and their mom and dad aren’t patient enough to housebreak them, so they keep them around for a couple of weeks, or for how ever long they can stand to keep rubbing the poor puppy’s nose in its excrement! I nearly went through the roof when I heard that their little ones asked for a bunny. Thankfully they have forgotten about wanting one for the time being. My brother had bunnies before having children, and he housed them in tiny cages in his drafty garage, where they died after a miserable year. He’s the type of person who is sure he knows everything, and that I’m too stupid to give him advice, so if I try to educate him it does no good.

I’m glad your co-worker’s daughter decided to keep the bunny. It’s good that, despite her disappointment, she was able to be more of an adult about it than her mother.

Yes I am glad for that first of all the mother shouldn’t have even asked her daughter if she wanted to get rid of it you tell your kid NO it was the mothers fault she should have had them sex the rabbit and first of all shouldn’t have even bought the rabbit from a petshop to begin with or should have taken me with her to sex the rabbit.

Indeed. But, people consider buns a “cage pet” that is disposable like a hamster, or gerbil (which aren’t either, but people think they are!). They don’t cost a lot, so people relate that cheap price tag on the animal itself as it’s actual worth. Pah. Powder cost me $10 (to adopt) but I have spent ugh… probably way too much to want to think about on him since then lol and his actual worth is priceless.

Sungura, my brother tried to pull that “I know everything, I don’t care what you say” junk with me over his pets. But I am a bit _too_ vocal to ignore when it comes to animals not being abused, so he gave in to me to not have to put up with me giving him hours of lectures everyday whether he wanted it or not. And in the end, my family knows I will quite happily cut off all communications with them if they insist on abusing an animal and it gets hurt. I wish people would just accept BASIC responsibility for pets that they get.

We bought Hodari at a pet store. She was being handled a lot, with customers carrying her around on their shoulders. I’d gone back to the store after seeing her the previous week, just to see her pretty face again, and I did not intend to buy her; but when I saw a woman and some young children passing her around I talked my DH into buying her. The store personnel sent us home with a lot of misinformation – which I corrected by discovering Binky Bunny and the HRS – and a guarantee that if Hodari died in a week we could get a replacement!  It’s really disgusting.

Stickerbunny, I am relieved that your brother finally listened to your good advice. Pestering people is sometimes what it takes. If I try to explain anything to my brother, though, he just goes off on an endless tangent about how, if I think something is right, it must assuredly be wrong because I was never as good at math or most other subjects as he was when we were growing up!   He drives me crazy. The best I can do is be subtle, and try not to seem like I know something he doesn’t.

Ha, i’d point out things he was bad at that I was good at in return if my brother tried to do that. Or simply stop having anything to do with him. lol

Carrying a rabbit on their SHOULDERS? What? And the employees LET that happen? ARGH. I would want to murder someone, what if she fell? Glad she ended up in a good home with a loving family though … and TWO attentive slaves.

Don’t feel bad Silly Sungura, my Leopold came from a feed store. I had wanted to adopt a rabbit from the humane society, but they rarely have rabbits there. We looked for quite some time, then my husband saw Leopold at the feed store and wanted to take him home. I couldn’t say no to that.
