I am getting a friend for Hammer! I just filled out an adoption form to see if they will approve me since i have so many animals and im 17. Im calling tomorrow  to make an appointment at the vet for Hammers nueter. Now my question is when can i get the bunny? I will wait till Hammer is nuetered of course but do i need to wait a while after that? Can i get the bunny and just bond with her while Hammer recovers, and wait to bond the two of them? Or do i need to wait a month after the surgery? I plan to take him with me to pick out the bunny. When can that happen? I know lots of questions and very unorganized but im just so excited for me and Hammer!

you can get the new bunny today if you want to, but you need to have a separate set-up for her. it is recc. that you wait one month post-neuter until introducing so all the hormones are out of the way. i’d suggest that you look into getting a spayed female. it’ll be the (hopefully) easiest bond… even better if Hammer picks out his own friend! you would have to wait until after the neuter to take him to meet the ladies. the way i did it, i brought home a neutered boy to my spayed girl and started bonding the second day. no time was wasted. but i know that’s not always possible. if you have the ability to wait, i would be patient and take your time.

All the buns are altered at the shelter so thats not an issue. Should i wait a month after the neuter to take him to pick out a friend? Ill just have to calm down and wait huh? lol

i am not positive about this because i don’t work in a rescue, but i *think* your bunny must be altered in order to come for a bunny date, even tho all the shelter bunnies are already altered. can someone correct me if i’m worng? like i said, it is best to wait one month after the neuter so the hormones are decreased… that’s when you’ll get to see his “real personality” the best.

Ok well i still have to check to see if the shelter even allows bun dates but i imagine they would. He will be altered asap, i checked today and he is all ready to go.

I think it just depends on the shelter/rescue. The HS allows anyone to bring anything in…But I’m certain that well run shelters would not allow dating with unneutered bunnies

This is great! I can understand your eagerness to go get bun NOW! lol

Personally, I’d wait until after Hammers well recovered from neuter.  I’d want to give him undivided attention through this, and being a male and all, he’ll want lots of swympafee!

I double triple ditto the idea of waiting a month after surgery and then take him bunny dating at the shelter. So in my opinion, best to wait. especially, since he seems to be prime with attitude right now. He will be a nightmare for another bunny. Most likely he’ll be rude and start non-stop mounting. Not the best date to be had. Also, if you bring a bunny home and wait for him to be neutered, be prepared for marking, and even more attitude as he gets the scent of another bunny in the house.

i did not do dating when i got Max. it was 3 hours roundtrip in 90+ degree weather so i didn’t want to subject Mead to that, plus i had already made up my mind to adopt Max. so we went ourselves to get him. the second day he was home i started switching sides of the xpen every night. the day after that (the 3rd day) i started bonding. it took 3 weeks of everyday bonding, but it worked. i really lucked out. and i had the great support of BB (Markus and Sarita… HUGS!) you just need to be committed to doing it everyday. it is generally easier to bring a spayed female to a neutered male, so that is in your favor. wait the month and then take him with you and it should go much easier. you also have the advantage that he lives in your room, so probably every other place in your house in neutral, right?

Ohh a good reason to wait until he’s fully recoverd, his immune system is compromised while that incision is healing and althought they try, shelters aren’t the cleanest places!

Yep everywhere but my room is neutral. He has been in the hall maybe 3 times but other then that the rest of the house is up for bonding. I was referred to a lady in my area that the shelter knows, who has five foster females. Since the shelter is a ways away i think ill go to see her. She hasnt emailed me back yet though. Anyone know about how long it takes to go through all the appointments and papers and such? I want to get her in one month, as soon as Hammer can visit lol. Should i be calling to set things up now or do i still have plenty of time to waste?

I think i may call the bun foster mom tonight and make a contact with, talk about hammer dating etc. I just cant wait anymore lol, i gotta get the ball rolling.. even if it is really early to start. And if she doesnt want Hammer to come and date in her home then i can get her sooner and bond later when everyone is ready! Im not sure if i secretly want her to say no dating or not lol just kidding

Oh, I know how you feel about that. I get really exited over things too and then that is ALL I can think about. Instead of reading or playing video games I am thinking and planning for that “thing” that I am exited for. It happened when I was going to get Fern but she was still too young to take home. I did get to visit her though!

Lol i cant help it. This is all i think for the past few days. Tv, reading, homework, class even a test today… i just cant keep focused on anything but the idea of another bunny. I keep looking at the pics of the buns and reading their stories lol, even though i already know exactly what they say! Like its going to change or something lol
