› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Another allergy thread?
I was really really really ill starting January 3rd. I missed 2 weeks of school and went to the doctor 3 times. I had ulcers in the back of my mouth and throat, unbelievable pain in my throat from them, and a fever. With those symptoms I went to the doctor. She gave me codine and told me if the ulcers start oozing pus then I have strep and come back.
They never oozed, but it was the symptoms of strep otherwise.
I didn’t get better, it got worse. The pain was horrible, and then it progressed into some sort of sinus infection.
I had that horrible cough that is like barking and your lungs almost come out of you. You know that horrible cough!? It almost floored me everytime I did it, and the pain from the ulcers were indescribable.
It got even worse from there….I couldn’t breathe from my nose, and my ears were clogged, infact so clogged that I couldn’t even hear out of my left ear. It sounded like an ocean roaring and nothing else. I am a music major and being so congested and not even able to hear out of one ear….and the pain in that ear…..omg….it brought me into tears it was so painful. I couldn’t play my french horn at all.
2 more doctors visits and not really any answers other than “viral infection and sinus infection and maybe mild strep throat”
Okay well it’s now almost February ….
I still have that barking cough. Some of you know I was gone for 3 days for my wind symphony band tour and I didn’t cough at all. Now that I am home and in my room again it’s cough cough cough cough cough.
My dad is very happy to exclaim ‘YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO YOUR RABBITS!!!”
Do you think that cough could be related to them being in my room?? I mean they have been in my room…well Bunzilla has been in my room for 3 years now….is that even possible???
It could be an allergy that is manifesting more due to have so many more buns now, and their respective hay piles, than you did before. Have you tried taking an allergy pill to see if it helps?
OK, first of all, a doctor like that makes me mad. There. done.
Next, you need to get that dr. to give you a referral if your health insurance requires it and run, not walk, to an ear, nose and throat specialist. You have an untreated illness that a second opinion will help to fix. Her opinion is useless. So make an appt. asap with any ent dr. to have your condition properly diagnosed. Allergies may be aggrivating your illness, but did not cause throat ulcers, deeply congested lungs, etc.
You definitely could be developing an allergy in your room, as they are cumulative as you get older and more exposed to mild allergens until you reach a higher threshold and react strongly. The cause can be specifically determined by one visit to an allergist. You can get a scratch test which will test for the bunnies, other animals and their dander, hay, grass, dust, mold, basically everything except specific foods (which can also be a strong cause of allergies, like if you started snacking on peanuts or mangos and never had before, then had severe symptoms. It’s the least likely cause of what’s wrong though.) If you weren’t allergic to the bunnies before, I seriously doubt you are now. I am betting that it’s the hay or the litter, combined with inability to vacuum it up enough in winter with all doors and windows shut and recirculated air from the heater that’s aggrivating it. Has your Dad cleaned out your air vents in the house lately, for example? It can get thick, like dryer lint, and bother everyone.
So please be seen by a second dr. right away. This is not normal and never should last this long. And dump this current dr.

P.S. Use alchohol and clean out your instrument, so you are not inhaling your own germs from earlier in the month. Also bathroom glass, and phone.
Thanks guys
Uhm….I don’t think I am back on my dad’s health insurance yet. He has carpenters and even though Obama said I can be put on it till I am 25 they are fighting and saying I can’t be put on until next year which would be when I am 25 so….I don’t have health insurance and my parents seriously don’t care and will blame this on the rabbits so I am just stuck with the school doctors. My aquarium has flooded on my carpet about 3 times, about 20 gallons of water each time and I hid it from them and tried to clean it myself….well there is mold on my carpet that I have tried my best but…..it’s green!!! It’s been like this too for a really long time. We steam cleaned my carpets but the mold keeps coming back even though it’s been about a year since it last flooded.
I will have to see if I can get another doctor at school or until I pass out in my room maybe my parents will care.
Also…again I clean their boxes everyday and use woodstove pellets now again which has been helping.
I am interested in buying an air purifier. The hair and dust in my room is crazy!
I agree with Pam that you really need to see an ENT. Would it be possible to pay for it out of pocket? I think a couple hundred dollars would be worth it to figure out what’s going on.
I have a lot of experience with personal sinus, asthma, and allergy issues and the coughing sounds like you have either asthma or bronchitis (though you’ve been on antibiotics, so that’s less likely). Allergies can definitely cause asthma and your symptoms sound very serious.
Since you’ve had the rabbits for a while I would actually guess it’s the mold. My mom worked in a moldy building for a couple years and had severe side effects – she had pain and ringing in her ears for years and many of the people she worked with ended up with severe asthma. Mold can be a nasty thing! I would talk to your parents and rip up the carpet.
I hope you figure something out and feel better!
If it’s a persistent barking cough, I would guess that you might have developed some sort of secondary bronchitis from your initial infection. A good sign is a presence/absence of phlegm, particularly colored phlegm. Did you finish your entire round of antibiotics as directed by the doctor? Even if you did, it may have settled into trickier infection. I’m for some reason particularly susceptible to secondary bronchitis after I get sick, so unless I go to the doctor again I end up coughing for another two months afterwards. It sucks, lol. As far as possibility of asthma, your sign of it is going to be wheezing (especially on the exhale) and a “tight” restricted feeling in the lungs. You said you’re coughing now that you’re back home, but is it JUST in your room or in general? Might give more hints regarding whether this problem is an infection (continuation of the previous?) or environmentally bunny-related. Hope you feel better and figure out what’s wrong…go see a doctor! ![]()
So the doctor didn’t actually test for strep? If it’s positive, then you should get antibiotics for it. I’m surprised the doctor didn’t do the test. I picked up strep once when I was a kid, but it manifested as Scarlet Fever. I had a rash all over my body. I remember taking weird medicine for it that smelled like bananas. Anyway, if it turned out not to be strep, then I would think the doctor would give you a referral.
Lintini, I hope you get better. You could try sleeping in another room to see how you get on. As a test. It could be the hay, or an alllergy developed over time, but even if it were your rabbits, could you move them to the aviary until you move out?
The doctor only gave me pain medicine. Thank you all for the responses. I have not been on any antibiotics Elro
She gave me codine.
I cough up clear stuff from my lungs. Also when I exhale, it does feel tight and it makes me cough more. From what I can tell only my bedroom is setting me off.
The guest room has a bed but Velvet is in there now as she recovers. I could sleep on the couch I guess 😐 Petzy…after losing my guinea pig to raccoons out there….I would rather cough and sound like a barking dog than ever have them outside. I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night.
I’m going to talk to my brother and see if he will help me rip up this carpet and go from there. The doctors at school probably won’t do anything for me, and my parents will let me sit down here for another year and cough my butt off just to prove a point about the rabbits before actually helping me get better.
Gosh, I’m really sorry Lintini! We’ve been so preoccupied wishing good vibes to and your helping Velvet, I had no idea this was going on. I agree, you need a GOOD doctor for yourself. It sounds like you’ve been so afraid to hear I told you so, from your parents, that you’ve been laying low and suffering with this rotten doctor. She doesn’t sound very caring or concerned and seems rather distant even, and first off, you need a good doctor for yourself…immediately. I’ll let the others advise about the carpet, and other things but it does seem if you can get rid of the carpet, you can eliminate that from being the cause of your symptoms. What about the horse hay? I’m not sure what else, just, GET WELL SOON.
the mold is right under my computer desk, where i spend a lot of time at.
blehhhhh. Thanks ![]()
Can you rearrange things so your computer desk and computer is on an unaffected area of the carpet?
…As far away from the moldy area as possible…
Maybe it would help to cover the mold on the carpet with a layer of baking soda, or a NON-TOXIC-to-you dry carpet shampoo?
I can’t, my room is wall to wall furniture. I have it covered up by an area rug. It’s probably been this way now for a year.
Yea I don’t really care to hear the “told you so” “this isn’t healthy” “normal people don’t have 5 rabbits in their room” blah blah blah from my parents. But I shouldn’t still be coughing and hacking like this…
I’m not advocating the use of antibiotics, but I would have thought they would have given you some! Sorry, that’s just me in disbelief about how your doctor is handling things. Your symptoms seem consistent with something bacterial.
My doctors notes just said “viral infection” >:|
I mean who knows how much mold is actually in the carpet padding and the carpet. I bet its a ton.
When my tank flooded the first time, I didn’t want to tell my parents and so for 2 weeks I was putting towels down there and soaking it up and leaving my windows open….after 2 weeks it was still wet so I gave up and told my mom. So we steam cleaned them but the mold keeps coming back. I remember my exact words … “hey mom…uhm…don’t tell dad okay?? well….my tank kinda flooded about 20 gallons of stinky fish water all over my floor….”
Because you are a musician, it is very likely that whatever you are aspirating to cause your symptoms is going to get farther into your system than most folks. I had bronchitis every year during high school, and it made vocal class all but impossible. I’d had it for about a month before it got bad enough I went to the doctor. And clearing it up took longer because, of course, I was always practicing my breathing and everytime I tried to inhale, well you can imagine all the nasty stuff that would get trapped farther down in my chest. Although I had to take deep breaths to try to clear my lungs too.
But a round of antibiotics sounds like a given for something like this, especially because of it’s duration so far. Awhile back, my daughter has had something called apthous ulcers in her throat and they caused her a great deal of agony. This is what your symptoms remind me of, except she didn’t have the cough.
I don’t like the mold in the carpet. I doubt it’s the bunnies, unless for some reason Velvet being a rex has a different fur and, if some is still in your room, it may just be her fur that’s bothering you. She is the only thing that is different in your place recently, right?
But if the water was from a fish tank, well, there’s all sorts of germs in that. 0_o Plus the mold isn’t good for the bunnies either.
For some temporary relief (until you can get to a better doctor, which you do need) see if you can find (and stand to drink) some Traditional Medicinals Cold Care PM tea, it contains yarrow flower which is a blood purifier. I recommended it for bunnytowne to use that when she was so ill recently. It will at least, hopefully, ease your discomfort and help boost your immune system. (be sure you’re not allergic to any of the ingredients first)
While my son and I were decluttering recently, we realized one of the wooden window frames in my front room is caked with different kinds of mold. This one has to come out completely and the wall be torn away and a new plastic frame and another window are needed to replace it. It’s very discouraging, so much home repair required this spring and very little funds, but…has to be done. I would guess it comes from our house holding way too much moisture from when we take showers and having to keep all the windows locked all winter.
Plus I have to wonder if this is a factor in Mimzy’s respiratory issues as well, even though he is nowhere near the bad window.
Please find a way to see a good doctor, Lin. ((((hugs and healing vibes)))) I’ll be keeping you in my prayers!
Thanks Mimz <3
You are right about it affecting me a lot more…I had my horn lesson and he had me singing and playing my part on piano and my voice kept cracking because of the crud I keep coughing up it’s like lining my vocal chords and I am constantly clearing my throat…not to mention the amount of practice time I lost out on because my ears were so plugged. ….I probably need to really clean out my horn and boil my mouthpiece ….I could be reinfecting myself daily……
akkkkk. I will see if I can get a walk in tomorrow at the health center. <3
If your phlegm is completely clear, then I seriously doubt you have a bacterial infection…there is a possibility it could be your leftover viral infection, but most likely environmental given that you said your room seems to trigger the symptoms. In any case, antibiotics probably wouldn’t help. Of course, my non-professional medical-student-over-the-internet advice, as per all internet medical advice, can never replace a physical exam, so I strongly encourage you to see another doctor to get to the root of this. I’m sorry to hear about the problems with your parents…sounds like ripping up the carpet might be a good idea for you; I really hope things clear up for you soon.

That sounds like a good thing to do, especially if it’ll help you feel better. I hope you feel better soon! I’ll keep you in my prayers also, especially that you get a good doctor right away.
Where can I find that tea at Lashkay?
Thanks again everyone, you are all really kind with such thought out and long responses. I really appreciate it.
Take care of those chords too, dear. You don’t want callouses on them. *wags finger*
Your instructor needs a thump too…imagine having you play and sing while you’re this sick! Hmph! My director told me to stay OUT of the choir room till I was better! lolz…Likely she didn’t want everyone else infected as well.
I’ll be thinking of you! ![]()
Did you quote me, Lash? It’s not making the normal box that it usually does. 0_o
I recommended the tea, Lin. You should be able to find it at any organics section of your supermarket. It used to be almost 90% yarrow flower, but they found out that worked too well I guess.
Now they mix it up with menthol, which is good for clearing congestion. It still works, just not like it used to when it first came out.
I edited this post. Sorry if my earlier response here sounded snippy, I was just surprised to see my text lashkay’s post without a quote box. Figured it was another update error.![]()
Yes, Mmzy, I meant to quote you but didn’t know how and the quote box didn’t come up. Sorry. Your post posted previously however and Lintini replied directly to it so I’m sure all know the recommendation for the tea was from you. I was just seconding it, as it sounds like a really good idea. Hope you can take it, Lintini and if so, hope it helps, sounds like there’s a good chance it will. I’ll check out the quote box how it works now.
Not a problem, Lash, I realized after I posted it and submitted, it sounded like I’m some kind of glory hound…not what I intended at all. My apologies. I don’t want you to be upset with me. (blush)
Anyway, yeah, I used to drink that stuff all the time when I first got to Alaska because we would ALWAYS get horribly sick every year. I’d be burning up for about 24 hours, but it would do the trick. It doesn’t induce fever, but you feel like you’ve had a nice plate of kung pao chicken or something like. ![]()
No, not at all, Mmzy, You didn’t sound like a glory hound. It’s important that it be known whom any given advice or recommendation is from. it’s kind of you to offer an apology, but none is needed. In fact, it’s I who should do so and that’s why I did – for not originally pointing out my inability to call up the quote box and saved us the stress I caused. But, it’s straightened out now and Lintini will know it was you who recommended the tea and I who…bungled. I may even try that tea myself sometime…sounds like potent stuff. Get better soon, Lintini!
Ohhh sorry guys hehe! Sorry Mimz , so many really nice responses I got mixed up! I will have to look for that tea tomorrow after class! Thank you
Mimz……did you check your mailbox today!?!!??!!?!?
Thank you you guys are so sweet! I am so stressed out I think that’s why I am not better. My 2 bink bros are seperated and not getting along Velvet getting sick but thank goodness she is doing so well! I just gave her some meds and she was demanding some pets and sniffed me down good. Her sniffs sounded good too lol.
I have my jury April 1st for my horn recital…and my piano accompanist just bailed on me……….
I had my horn lesson today and he had me buzzing with my lips this stupid exercise and I felt so stupid and frustrated because he sounded so much better at it than me that I just started crying!!! LOL ughhh I am so sensitive I hate it but I don’t feel like I am meshing well with him…or I should say he is really not going to let me get away with anything and I need to toughen up. I’ve been taking a weight lifting class and I have to keep track of my food intake. It’s been eye opening. I went to band today at 2pm and my hands were just shaking because I didn’t eat or drink anything yet because I had just woken up at 1pm….I can sleep forever I swear… so I had terrible shakes and felt horrible and didn’t eat or drink anything until 6pm when I was done. I think this is a direct reason why I get sick so often and stay sick for so long. I really don’t take care of myself at all.
*wonders wether humans can have baytril….* j/k
Hey Lintini, sending lots of health (((vibes))) your way!
I’m kinda surprised you weren’t given antibiotic straight off. Seems doctors here are writing scripts for them not long into an appt.
You have advocate for yourself and be firm when seeing the school doctors. This effects your studies and career and is important! Like I need to tell you but maybe you have to be really clear about that to the doctors you see.
It probably is hard to say whether environment (your room) is the cause or something your currently sensitive too because you respiratory system is stressed due to viral infection. It can be chicken or egg situation…ie. your system supressed because of chronic intolerances turning to allergy, so then you’re susceptible to picking up infections. OR is it the other way round. Hard to say but first move is to treat it.
Re mold: steaming will not kill mold spores. If there is any sort of moisture getting back into the flooring, then the mold can grow back. Is there any other way water would get into the flooring? Like from pipes or something?
If you’re going to remove the carpet, please wear protective gear and face mask.
As to things in the environement you might be sensitive too, mold is a biggy. Then there is hay, litter materials, even the rabbits urine. And of course their fur but I’m thinking you could bury your face in their fur and not react. : )
I don’t react to the rabbits in any way, when I was just at the vet last night, I had Velvet out after they took her weight and she was burried into my chest and neck and we snuggled until the doctor came in , so about 10min. Didn’t make me sneeze or cough at all.
guinea pigs give me hives, and so do my dogs.
jerseygirl, I would guess the lack of an antibiotic prescription is due to the diagnosis of a viral infection. A lot of doctors these days are becoming more wary about prescribing antibiotics, which I think is a good thing; we have way too many antibiotics in everyday things (soaps, impregnated in plastic/rubber, etc). Interesting reading on the topic, though a bit long: http://www.bio.utexas.edu/courses/kalthoff/bio346/PDF/Readings/08Levy%20(1998).pdf
Lintini, I feel you on the recital stresses; I’m actually scrambling to learn the piano accompaniment for my sister’s violin piece after her pianist last-minute bailed on her too. Sounds like so much is going on in your life right now…school, buns, parents, health..as you said, taking care of yourself can be the most important thing. I’m sure your buns are depending on you to feel better to get lots more lovin’ ![]()
Ditto that. ^
Peppy, thanks…I was wondering as typing about antibiotics being not used for viral. I do think antibiotics are over used for sure. Just the norm for doctors I’ve seen in the past to be handing our scripts for them! I’m happy to hear things are changing.
Ohhh dear. I was coughing today and paid attention to what I coughed up and it’s green
Does that mean I am still fighting an infection?
Yep. Green = infection
edit: well, infection, or hay in your lungs ![]()
😐
I’m shocked at the lack of antibiotics! I know that doctors are giving them out less these days, but I’ve been on many (many) in my life and I’ve never had a doctor fail to offer them once I’ve been sick for longer than three weeks. Viruses just shouldn’t last that long, in my experience, and if it is then there’s something else going on. The coughing up green is definitely a sign of an infection, so I would get some antibiotics asap. At this point it might take more than one round of them even.
I really hope you get your carpet out of there too! The more I think about it the more I think that could be your problem if it’s not bacterial. As I said, my mom had health problems for years after being in a moldy office, so I hope you can get rid of it now and start to recover. Based on your past experiences with the buns and lack of allergies, it seems strange that you would suddenly develop such a strong allergy (but then not have a problem at the vet).
As far as meds go, I would recommend Mucinex (or Mucinex D) to break up the mucus and get it out of there. I’ve had a lot of ENTs recommend it recently as the only over the counter that actually helps instead of just covering up symptoms.
Even if you have a viral infection, at this point something else opportunistic may have attacked your immune system, so yeah…green boogies, not good.
I agree with Elro…hubby was diagnosed with pneumonia recently and was given inhalers for it…yet he has used Mucinex before and it works pretty well for him. But either way, you don’t want whatever you’ve got to turn into pneumonia, it tends to recur.
I can also stick my nose in the buns’ fur and not sneeze, but their hay gets to me. And Hello Kitty’s spit will make me rash, plus recently I’m starting to show hives when Jenna licks my arm. It’s odd how some animals affect us and others don’t. I think it has a lot to do with what they eat.
Please find some help for this. It can’t possibly be ‘just a virus’ anymore.
We are all very concerned. (((((hugs & healing vibes)))))))
I agree, Lint, you need more accurate care.
Many bunnies are depending on you.
I can’t believe I’m only seeing this now….
I’m so sorry you’re feeling bad, honey bun!! I was in music school… for a year. Then I transferred to arts and sciences. Music School is SO STRESSFUL OMG. I remember the sleepless nights, the spontaneous sobbing in the middle of lessons, and of course the trembling hands before performances.
I actually ended up with horrible allergies, which plague me to this day. The stress made them ten times worse. I could barely sing during my performances (I was a vocal major… no bueno).
Try claritin D. It’s the only thing that helped me. But I wouldn’t take it before going to sleep, because decongestants tend to make your heart race and it’s hard to sleep that way.
Just want to add my two cents – I had a cough once that just wouldn’t go away. I felt fine but I had a lingering, hacking cough that lasted well over a month. I finally saw a doctor who gave me a steroid shot which finally got rid of it.
Regarding the mold, it is really bad news for you, the bunnies, everyone really…….PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE consider getting rid of the carpet and doing a thorough cleaning.

Also, Claritin D isn’t what it used to be. Apparently when it became over the counter they dropped the amount of meds by at least half. My doctor recommends Zyrtec as it’s stronger. I miss the days when Claritin was prescription only and actually worked!
If it’s not a virus and happens to be allergies, have you considered getting allergy shots? I have had them for 2-3 years and it’s helped me tremendously. You start off going into the clinic and getting a shot twice a week and after a couple weeks or so you start getting them only every month. You can eventually stop getting them after a while. I used to be allergic to pretty much everything until I started getting allergy shots (dogs, cats, all grasses, pollen, trees, etc). I no longer get allergies around most animals.
Claritin D was good for me 2-3 years ago. When I took it last year, I couldn’t sleep despite being taken in the morning.
Zyrtec made me sleepy :3
It all depends on your body and how it takes.
((Healing vibes to Lins))
Yeah, I have to be careful about taking decongestants in the evening… I’ll just lie there with my heart thump-thump-thumping!

Same! When I was a kid my doctor told me not to take them because my reaction was so strong he thought it might be an allergy. I assumed I was allergic to them until I was an older teen and finally tried them again. I deal much better with them now, but I definitely don’t take them after 10am.
Totally. Unfortunately, they’re one of the only things that clear up my STUBBORN nose!
Thanks everyone for all your replies!!!!
I think I want to start off with ripping out my carpet so my dad can see what he’s had me living in and so he will stop blaming it on the rabbits.
The reason my room still has carpet is because of my fish tank and rabbits. The guest room and my room are the only ones with carpet now, the other rooms and living rooms got hardwood floor refinished.

Same here. My problems aren’t so much allergy related as sinus/virus related (I’m on allergy shots which helps a ton) so I take Mucinex D because I don’t need the allergy power of Claritin. But it has to be the D version or it doesn’t help at all. It’s so annoying that you have to buy them from the pharmacy now.
It is! And you have to wait until you have only about one left before they’ll let you get another box!
I just had to get my hub some Clairitin D at the RX counter…so they think it’s me that’s using it then, since they took a copy of my license?
Creepy. *shivers*
It’s bad enough we have folks who will misuse that stuff, but even worse that we practically have to give our DNA sequence to get a box for legitimate reasons. >.<
Sooo…how are you doing Lin? I agree you should use a mask if you’re going to tear up that carpet…and perhaps move your other occupants if you can while you do it. If not, to at least minimize the amount of spore that will come up with the offending piece, hang some visquine or some other kind of barrier to keep it from spreading to the buns and your other stuff. Not quite sure how far the mold will go airborne, but better to not have it settle elsewhere.
Did you have a chance to take the tea MIMZYMUM suggested? Or the Zyrtec or Mucinex D also suggested by other members in the thread? I hope something has kicked in and you are getting good relief from your cough. Although with that mold lingering in your area, I guess it’s an uphill battle. HOPE YOU (& VELVET, too) ARE FEELING BETTER.
