          BinkyBunny has a page with some info about Anal Glands on it;
          https://binkybunny.com/BUNNYINFO/MonthlyMaintenance/tabid/64/Default.aspx
          (scroll to the bottom of the page)

          Bunnies have two little scent glands on either side of their anus. Some people swab out those glands – some bunnies will build up a waxy, smelly substance inside those glands which can solidify and cause pain, smelliness, and infection.

          If you want to check your bun’s anal glands, find its anus and squeeze around the edges. Eventually, something will smell and you’ll notice a couple of holes to the sides of the anus. It’s a good idea to check these every month or so – some bunnies don’t need these cleaned at all, while some need regular gland cleaning.

            It’s actually not as gross or hard to clean them as you might think Check out the link fluffybunny posted-that will explain what you need to do. You can always ask your vet to show you how if you are nervous about it too.

              I get 4 q tips and wet them.  I also bring some tweezers just for them.   Cotton gets like waxy and some solid black buildup that I can only remove with tweezers. The qtips dont’ work  on those.   Not with his anyway Tho when the black stuff is removed I can use the qtips and they work ok then

              Ruby I just need the qtips. I also have to wash  my hands to the elbows twice or Cotton boxes and grunts at me and nips me sometimes cuz he still smells Ruby’s strong scent on my hands or something.

              Nutty little fellow.  While Ruby is such a lady.

                I usually use disposable gloves and just pull out the buildup with my fingers. I’ve found that Q-tips don’t work so great for me – my bunny sometimes has hard, dark brown buildup as well as sticky clearish stuff when I check the glands…so if your rabbit gets that type of buildup, just wearing gloves and cleaning with your fingers works great.

                  I sued q-tips when I did my three. I found though, like FluffyBunny said, the q-tips didnt work as well as my fingers do. It was just easier to get little stuff out.

                        I put a little Aloe gel on the glands before I clean them. This softens up any um. . . crusties. Plus it feels nicer for the buns!
