An update! Didn’t know where to put it :/

So I took Roscoe and Thumper to the vet recently for check ups. Thumper is all fine and dandy, if on the high side of a normal weight. Roscoe on the other hand needs his molars drilled down because they’re pointy on the sides (sorry if this is the incorrect way to describe it, I don’t remember too well). Roscoe hasn’t been eating hay very well but still eats his greens and pellets and drinks fine. I also took fecal samples to compare: thumpers is round, gold/brown, smooth. roscoes is black, bumpy surface and sometimes very small. So this ‘surgery’ (I will call it that even though it isnt) is going to cost like $200 rather unfortunate but I’m saving up! 

I’m also quite frustraded with roscoe because he still isn’t litter trained!! He pees everywhere in his cage.. in his crinkle tunnel, on top of his wooden hutch, everywhere! (except the litterbox usually). He poos where ever hay is and he’s a very messy eater so it’s everywhere! He also escapes 24/7 EVEN with a sheet pinned to the top of his pen :S the vet called him an escape artist! lol I stil love him though!! 

I have trouble letting them free roam out of their pens.. Thumper has to be supervised constantly because she chews everything (books, baseboards, couches) so the best I can do is her in my room :/ while roscoe is in the bunny room. 

Mocha if you see this; your buns just have your room to free roam in too right? How big is it? 

I’m a little stressed out if no one noticed but I’ve picked up a new hobby.. couponing!! its fun and free

But I’m sorry to hear that you’re having litterbox issues. And watch out, because couponing can get stressful sometimes! lol Maybe it’s just me though

Yep, $200 without the blood work. Right now I’m waiting for some in the mail, I feel like I’m going to go nuts waiting lol! Thanks bwild

Ouch. If I were you I might call around and see if there is anyone else who would do it for less. $200 seems slightly outrageous to me (that’s about 13x more than what I payed to get Penelope’s molars filed down a month or so ago). But maybe that’s average and I’m the one with the vet who doesn’t realize how much money he’s loosing (not complaining)

Sorry I need a refresh, are Roscoe and Thumper bonded and both altered? Are they different breed bunnies? How old is Roscoe? Did you have him checked for any urinary problems?

SamandLady’s: If you look at my other topics you can find all that info and pictures but I’ll tell you anyway I got thumper about a year and a bit ago and I have no idea what breed she is but I call her harlequin because of her colours, she is 1.5 years old and spayed. I adopted roscoe in May and he is 2.5 years old and he is dwarf hotot and neutered. I speed dated thumper and we all thought roscoe was a good match and I tried bonding them for a long time and it didn’t go so well. Now I’m in school and have no time for bonding so that’s on hold for now They share a room (I call them room mates), they each have a pen in the room.

They both had full check ups (teeth, temperature, everything). The vet said that since he is peeing fine and he is still pooing a lot, it most likely is just the teeth that are affecting everything.

I think if you like and trust your vet you need to stay put. I am the same way, my vet is a bit more than other vets for some procedures but I feel I get the best service and care from my vet.

I think your vet is correct about the teeth too – I am surprised by how teeth can affect a rabbits input and output and everything else. Dental problems can be very painful and uncomfortable for rabbits and are overlooked far too much by owners and vets…they can be hard for owners to spot and sometimes vets too – sometimes the only way to detect problems is to put the rabbit under light anesthesia.

Thanks Sarita! I did think about asking around for prices but I do really like this clinic. In fact when the Vancouver Rabbits Rescue and Advocacy puts on their annual rabbit festival, these vets give free check ups! So they’re super nice too

I’m glad that I knew about his previous dental problems so I could always be on the lookout for these things. He will have to be put under a light (ah nervous!) anesthesia.

You might get some critical care for him as well and have it on hand in case he needs it before or after his procedure and stops eating.

Is your vet including a few days worth of pain relief after the procedure? That might be a good idea to have on hand as well. Sometimes their mouths are sore or tender after the tooth filing.

Good idea! I didn’t ask about anything for pain but I would hope so! I’ll ask when I make the appointment.
