Alternatives to Metacam for arthritis?

Hello all! I recently adopted a senior bun, he is a lionhead mix, about 7 years old, approx. 1.78 kg, and is on .5 ml of metacam a day, .25 ml in the morning and evening, and I am running low, and I don’t have a ton of time to run to the vet right now, I can if its the only way, but I was wondering if anyone has any alternatives to metacam for arthritis? He is also on a heart medicine mix, and gets eye drops.

Oxbow has a Joint Support supplement you can purchase. Wick takes their digestive support and Vitamin C to help him out through his ringworm sensitivity, and he seems to be doing quite well, so although I haven’t tried the Joint Support, Oxbow has a good record with worthwhile supplements.

A lot of people online mention Myristol pellets, so that may be something to look into as well.

Huh. I did? I don’t remember at all but that’s no surprise. Rumball likes those 3 veggies so I’ll have to keep it in mind (better then previously)! Parsley seems to be strong diuretic, so I’ll need watch that.

I’ve got some rosehip powder I’m want to try for the buns. I’ve only given occasionally so far. Tumeric(curcumin) is another natural anti-inflammatory. Heat is also very soothing – a low voltage pet mat could be worth looking into.

As for prescription meds, gabapentin injections have been used for arthritis but there is some cautions around that medication now, according to medirabbit.
Carprofen and Tramadol are some other alternatives. Vet will know what is suitable to be used in conjunction with his heart med.

It would be good if you can get his reliance on meds down if some alternative products work. If he does need stay on a med the rest of his life, check with vet if you can take the prescription and shop online. You’ll save some $$ that way. There are different brands of meloxicam that vary on price also. Oral meloxicam becomes less effective a few months after being opened so buying smaller portions, more regularly, might work best. I’m not certain if there are the same concerns with tablets.

Anyway, congratulations on the new bunny! I hope you find something to keep him comfortable.

Thank you! He has been on metacam for I think 2 years, I would have to double check his medical records, which are not at school with me, also I was told I could buy a bottle from the shelter his is from for $20, but I don’t know how big the bottle is. I am going to pick some up today or tomorrow, and then I also ordered the joint supplement from Oxbow, so I will be trying to lower his metacam but I think that he will probably be on it for life.
