my bunny has been on baytril for over 15 days, it worked great and her nose was completely clear. today though, i saw a large amount of white mucus at the front of one nostril, and it looks like the bacteria have become resistant to baytril. i need recommendations for other antibiotics to use. urgently, since her immune system is normally very weak and her condition gets really bad really quickly. have any of you resorted to other antibiotics that worked on snuffles or maybe an antibiotic that is known as a second resort for rabbits. the more suggestions the better. thank you so much for your help and any time you take to answer this. have a great day/night.

Have you taken her to a vet? She will need a culture done to see what bacteria it is and what antibiotics will kill it.

vets are not an option where i live. none treat rabbits and the ones that will offer treatment, never do lab tests. they just give you general medicine for the general disease for all species of animals while guessing the weight and the dosage. i honestly have zero trust in them simply from experience and common sense. you go with a medical complaint and your pet, they give you medicine with guessed dosage and very heavy side effects on rabbits. almost killed my bunny.

I agree with BH, if Baytril doesn’t help, a vet would probably want to do a culture to see what antibiotics the causative bacteria are sensitive to. Baytril is often first choice for snuffles, it’s a broad spectrum antibiotic that is effective against for example pasteurella and bordetella. Not rarely, longer courses than 2 weeks are needed for snuffles though. Sometimes penicillin is given for stubborn cases, but penicillin must always be given as injections to rabbits, it’s lethal if given by mouth.

Here is Medirabbit’s list of safe antibiotics, it can be good to bring this with you to the vet, in case they’re not very rabbit savvy:

Just a quick note: as you are a new member, your posts don’t go up immediately when you submit them.

Bam’s reply was given before your reply to went up, even though it now appears before it. I hope that makes sense!

Do you still have Baytril? If you saw it was working, I’d continue with it. Really stubborn infections can 4-6wk of antibiotics, if that.

                  Thank you Jersey, for clarifying.
justlookingforhelp: I’m sorry you don’t have access to reliable vets.

As Jersey says, it’s not uncommon for snuffles to need a longer course of treatment with Baytril.

I would say after 3 weeks if it hasn’t cleared up or started to lessen, then you need to try a different antibiotics. Depending on what the bacteria is, chloramphenicol is a good safe one and pen g is a good one but usually used for coccida and very tough, and deep infections. Metanitrozol is often used for diarrhea but it may be another option but you need to make sure his poops stay normal, and he should be on benne vac or some probiotics to keep his gut in check to prevent stasis. It does worry me that he had white stuff, make sure he continues to breathe okay since they are obligate nasal breathers they can’t breathe through their mouth if their nose is clogged like humans or dogs can.
