Hello- I have a dilemma and I know the answer but I figure asking can’t hurt. My boyfriend and I *were* planning on going out of town this weekend on a mini vacation (which is a rare occasion) and are having difficulties figuring out a safe, happy place for our buns to stay (they can’t come with us b/c there are going to be dogs there). Normally we board them at our Vet- but it’s REALLY expensive! Since we have 3 buns it’s around $34 dollars a day- added up over 4 days = a serious vacation killer. So my question is: are there any less expensive alternatives around? We live in Lawrence, KS and are close to Kansas City, KS. Does anyone else live in this area that knows of an affordable, safe, boarding place? Like maybe a nice individual that boards buns as a side business or a vet clinic or humane society that offers inexpensive boarding for small animals? I know I’m snatching at straws here but I haven’t given up hope yet of being able to go on this vacation. I would trust any advice given on this website b/c I know how protective and passionate everyone is about thier bunnies!
I could ask a few friends but they are not bunny savy and I don’t want to put my precious babies in the hands of an inexperienced person (or a stranger for that matter but like I said, I would trust binkybunny people)
Sometimes rescues offer bunny boarding at a very reasonable rate. You might check to see if there are any near you.
Is that $34/day for all three buns? That’s a pretty good deal actually. Other than a bunny sitter, you’re probably not going to find much better.
I agree that’s a pretty good price for 3 rabbits. If that price is per rabbit per day, well that’s a little different then.
It’s $20 for my two bonded buns and $14 for my other bun. I know it’s really reasonable but overall it comes out to be $136 over 4 days. The care and attention they recieve is totally worth it and normally I’d be able to afford it but I just paid tuition : ( . money always go byebye, lol.
I’ll call around to a few different rescue shelters. Should I worry about someone trying to adopt my bunnies if I leave them there? lol.
Thanks for the responses!
Whenever I took Maryann to The Rabbit Haven to meet Dono at their adoption showcase, there would always be inquiries as to adopting her as she seemed more interested in people than in the bunny. Damn her and her cuteness.
What about a bunny sitter? You can find a bunny savvy sitter, I’m sure. 136$ sounds very reasonable for the care and boarding of 3 bunnies for fours days!
I understand your financial pain……Anytime we plan any kind of overnight trip, I have to budget in the pet sitter. At this point w/ my medicated cats and piggy rabbits, I need to pay for 2 visits a day. I believe I usually pay about $40-55/ day for 4 cats & 2 rabbits. That’s for 2 visits a day and administration of meds. I believe I get a slight discount b/c I use the same guy all the time. So what I’m saying is….your piece of mind knowing that the boarding will take such good care of them…you might need to pull out the plastic and enjoy your weekend.
You can try some of the pet sitting organizations online: association of pet sitters, petsitters.com, petsitters.org, petsittersnetwork.com
Hope that helps?
Sounds like a good deal to me. I only have one rabbit and it costs me $15/day which I think is dirt cheap. My dog used to cost $45/day! The cat $20/day. With 3 animals it would cost me $80/day. That’s just part of the vacation budget unfortunately.
Hey! I live in Lawrence too! I’ve used a local pet sitter before- PetMinders (Petminder.org)- I don’t think the girl who does it has too much experience with bunnies but I was still really happy with her and she was really thorough when I met with her before hand to go over everything. It wasn’t too much cheaper though than your vet- I think I paid $25 a day for 2 visits a day. There’s at least one other pet sitter in town but I don’t have any experience with them, I just found their website online- lawrencepetfriends.com
Other than that I don’t have any advice- I was just excited to see someone else from Lawrence on here! Actually… I just moved here in January and am still looking around for a vet I like- would you mind telling me what one you use for your rabbits? ![]()
woops… that first website is supposed to be Petminders.org
Do you have friends/family you could impose on? They don’t have to be rabbit savvy, especially for a short period of time. You can sit their pets/kids in exchange-voila-no money
There’s a great bunny sitter guide on here too-just fill in the blanks ![]()
Regarding your question about worrying if they would accidentally be adopted if they were boarded at a rabbit rescue. Most places have a separate boarding place, and they have papers on the history of where their rabbit came from, so it would be highly unlikely that that kind of mix-up would ever happen.
Bob the Bunny says you are in the same town – why not seek bunny-sitting from Bob the Bunny?! ![]()
You guys are awesome! You never cease to make me smile : ) Bob the bunny, I have an excellent vet I use in Lawrence- its called Gentle Care Animal Hospital. Its off of 6th and Kasold. I’ve been going there with my buns for almost 4 years. They are amazing and there is more than one rabbit veterinarian there. The number (if you ever need it) is 785-841-1919. They are even more gentle than I am with my bunnies and most of the vets have had or still have bunnies as pets.
They love it when my 3 buns come around to be boarded I just can’t afford it this time (tuition, unfortunatly, is really crampin’ my style)
I don’t know any other bunny lovers in this town either. I’d love to meet Bob!
we’re in the same situation as you! (escept we’re going overseas for a full month!!) so i’ve asked a relative to move in for that time ![]()
“is that bunny up for adoption?!”
Markus hesitates…. “sigh… no, she’s mine.”

Something to also consider is in exchange for a knowledgeable rabbit-savvy bunny lover to watch your guys for 4 days is to in turn offer up boarding for them when they need to go out of town. ![]()
