Okay so like the title says I am having trouble finding a suitable hay dispenser lol.

I have tried a plastic ‘rack’ that you mount on the outside of the cage and the bun pulls the hay through on the inside but unfortunately all the hay just seemed to fall through to the floor.

Then I tried just hayn in a cardboard box, but Smudge just ATE all the cardboard. Then I tried hay in the litter box and a hay ball hanging within reach there too. The hay in the litter box got mostly thrown outside the box and burried (shes a digger/kicker lol) the ball part worked nicely unfortunately Smudge devours her hay so it’s empty in 5 mins.

The next thing I tried was a wire hay rack that you hang on the inside of the cage, this I’ve found is the WORST one! The hay stays in it at first and then as she starts eating it just all falls to the ground..

I’m at a loss! What do you guys use? Pictures would be awesome! I’m thinking my next step would be creating something of my own but I am open to any and all ideas! I’m going through hay like no-tomorrow!

            This is what I use:

Sorry to be a tease though as the source of these racks has dried up and I don’t think any are for sale anymore.  But it might give you some idea on what to do.  I can stuff one full bag from a pet store into one of these things and not worry about it for a week.

I had the same problem with hay, now I use a shoe box and cut a hole in the top, luckaly fern does not eat the cardboard. You could also dispsese hay from PVC piping..

Here is a link to another discussion on hay, it might give you a idea that works for you:

K&K – I have see the ball on a stand one at my local petstore. I think I will take a better look the next time I’m there at how much hay it will hold. Smudge eats alot of hay lol they ball she has now doesn’t last her half the day. If it hold enough it could work really well with her cage setupEdit to add: that grass ball is awesome though I’m definately getting one of those just for fun

                And if that doesn’t work….

Markus – I remembered seeing pictures of this on the post Moonlight posted (thanks Moonlight btw I was looking for that thread and couldn’t find it anywhere!) it sucks that they’re not selling them anymore… however I do happen to have a VERY craftsy grandad and dad who love doing projects. I think I may print off your picture (if that’s alright with you) and do some batting of the eyelashes and some pretty-pleases and if that fails well I was pretty good at shop in highschool. Can someone remind me of what woods are safe for buns?

There is a similar but more basic design (made of cardboard, but could be “remade” with wood) here on the leith petwerks page: http://www.leithpetwerks.com/prodpage.cfm?prod_code=MS915&allpics=1

As you can see, this bunny also seems to enjoy eating the cardboard So he probably needs a new one too!

ok, i have the plastic hay rack that goes on the side of the cage and to keep the hay from falling on the floor, i made a “shelf” for under the hay rack out of cardboard. Sophie has a cardboard fetish so she can nom nom nom on the cardboard and the hay, and the hay doesn’t fall on my floor anymore! it pushes it kinda into her cage.

OMG! Is that what I’m supposed to be doing with that ball?? I bought one for Tucker a few weeks back but I’vejust been giving it to her to roll around lol..I’ll have to try stuffing it with hay lol

What I do for hay is I have a little square deep tupperware container and I binder clip it to the side of the pen and put the hay in there. She loves getting it this way since she just picks out a strand at a time and munches away I do fill it daily though..since it’s smallish.

Luey is not a hay rack fan … I put one above his littertray and he just looked at it and kinda looked at me …. as if to say will you remove this thing as I keep banging my head on it.

He never used it even though it was brimming with hay!

I had the wire hay rack, all it was good for was making noise to summon the wait staff. I bought the BB willow hay rack, good for pulling the hay out, and even better as a snack itself.

I have to put hay in baskets, boxes, willow balls or the litter box at the other end of the house. Or I can stand there with a fist full to make his nibs eat hay. His favorite thing to do is jump in the hay storage container to eat hay, but then he pees and poops in it. I tried getting a smaller bin and recreating that, but no! He wants the forbidden container. I love him to bits but he can seriously do your head in!

i have a dollar container from wal-mart, with a loosely closed zip tie on the back, then a dog clip holding it to the xpen at an angle.  cardboard in the bottom keeps most of the hay in.  they have tipped it.  Meadow has climbed completely inside.  there really is no perfect solution, at least that i have found.  i don’t like the hay balls because it’s too hard to get the hay out, and Meadow would give up and not eat any hay.  it’s more important that they have good access to the hay, and it’s messy, then it is perfectly clean, but they eat less.
