Alfalfa hay for Thistle?

I know baby buns should eat alfalfa due to the calcim and vitamins. Thistles parents owner didnt feed hay at all that was the only thing I didnt care for about them but I wasnt rude I just suggested it would help with the cost of so much pellets and they agreed. anyway me living in hicktown I have a hard time getting alfalfa hay GRR I can buy it in large square bales or a round bale wich is for horses and cattle it would work BUT I cant feed it my horses because its would be like feeding a bag of pixie stix to a 5 year old! lol And I know Thistle is a little chub but there is no way he could eat all that! lol 

So till I get to a pet store in Tallahasse (I think we are going up there tueday) will it hurt Thistle to eat Timothy hay? I feel like its more important to keep hay in his system for a good healthy tummy but if Timothy hay isnt a good Idea till hes older I will hold off till I get some tuesday.

OH another question! lol What about alfalfa cubes? I saw them in a pet store in the bunny isle would that be ok if I dont have any luck finding ragular alfalfa hay? I’m sure its good for his teeth to chew on them and he gets the vitamins and calcium too.  whats your opinion?

Baby bunnies don’t really need alfalfa – it can be nice to feed, but timmy is honestly just fine, especially if you’re feeding an alfalfa pellet. I wouldn’t worry or go out of your way to find it.

Alfalfa cubes are fine for a treat, but shouldn’t be given instead of hay because It doesn’t ware down there teeth like hay does. If you really want to feed alfalfa hay you can order it off BinkyBunny’s store.

Whew thats a relief! I thought I was being a bad bun mom by not giving my lil chub his alfalfa! now I feel better! ^__^

Not a bad idea, him being a rex. They can be prone to fast weight gain. I agree, he should do fine on just timmy hay.

Timothy hay is just fine for him! Actually if you can get him to eat it now it is a good idea. My Nibbler wants nothing to do with Timothy hay except for pooping on it and demands his alfalfa, so when he gets a wee bit older and we have to ween him he is going to be a little brat I am sure!

 

Where do you live? Often times you can find alfalfa hay at big box stores like Wal-Mart or K-Mart (normally the Kaytee brand  which some people say is of lesser quality) but it would tide you over until you can get the type you like.

I’m lucky to live in a town that has a country club with stables so we have a really nice feed store right here in town that sells great quality hay and it’s no more expensive than Petsmart or other stores.

I never saw the good in giving a lot of alfalfa, only to have to wean them off of it in a few months. Timothy, if you can get him to like it, is just fine. I was also thinking that you can order some from the BB store here. If you want him to have that little extra alfalfa boost, just order one bag, and mix it in with the timothy. It will last a while that way, then weaning will be much less difficult. But you can do without.
