Air Travel?

 As many are, we are considering to go on vacation during spring break. We have the option to go to: Phoenix, San Diego, or Florida. We have different activities to do there, and different friends to see. When we were discussing this during dinner, I asked, “But what would we do with BOTH of the bunnies?”. I have had a school friend take care of my first bunny, before he passed away. We added to our family, and now there is two of them to find a caretaker for. She may be up for both of them, but I am unsure if she would have more space where her cat would not be allowed to keep them. My Dad, in reply, said that we could take one or both of the bunnies with us to our destination. 

Now, I am unsure if bunnies do well with air travel, or if they hate it. Would it be too much hassle to bring supplies and everything, or is it an option to purchase at the destination? I think bringing both of them would be a bit hard to keep track of,with all of the luggage and such. He said the hotel would allow caged pets. The good side is since we would get a suite, I could let whoever we bring have a bit of free roam as we would not be able to bring a cage!! My parents do not allow my bunnies to have free roam in the white carpet in our home.the only down side is, I would not apprieciate whoever we bring being thrown roughly into a hold with huge luggage bags. Even though it’s only three hours, I am unsure. 

 

There is good and bad sides to it, but I am really excited for the trip. What are you opinions on this?

I would be worried that they would literally be scared to death in the hold of an air plane. If you can’t have them in the cabin with you, don’t take them. That is my opinion anyways. Maybe someone else will have a better suggestion/more experience though.

Are you bunnies bonded? If they are, you should not separate them.

No they are not bonded as they are two unneutered males.

If it’s just for a week during spring break, I would advise against traveling with the bunnies. A lot of airlines do not allow bunnies in the cabins (though small dogs and cats are okay, isn’t that weird?) and the cabin would probably be deadly with abrupt changes in temperature, pressure, and deafening noises…way too much stress for a bunny.

What are their living arrangements like? Is it possible to ask your friend to come over once a day to give them a bit of play time and do things like change litter/give food?

The hotel room will not be bunny proofed and might have unexpected hazards. Wires are the most obvious worry, but also hotels are usually heavily treated with pesticides and people sometimes drop pills that roll under furniture, and lord only knows what else. I would not let a bunny loose in a hotel room.

EP, you made a good point. I hadn’t thought of that before. I will take only one, or none of them. I will not take the bunny if I cannot have them in the cabin with me. I am now mostly on the side where I would not want to bring them. I will talk to my friend at swim team today, and see if she can make arrangements to take both of them. Otherwise, I’m stuck.

I know they wouldn’t apprieciate being thrown up upon, (sorry!), just in case.

I would never travel with my bunnies unless absolutely necessary. It would be awful for your bunny to get a stress-induced illness while you are on vacation. You would have a hard time locating a rabbit vet.

Can you leave a friend/family member your house keys and have them come over twice a day to take care of the bunnies? That’s what I do when I go away.

I would also advise against it. Unless you absolutely HAVE to, don’t.
Maybe your neighbor or friend could help out.
