Air Purifier/Bunny Smell

Hey everyone. So I’ll hopefully be getting my bunnies in the next few months, yay! Now, I’ll be keeping them in my basement with me. It’s not very big, a bathroom, hall, and bedroom, and once they’re trained I’ll let them roam around. But as it’s in the basement, it only has a small window, so I can’t really air out my room. I was wondering if anyone knows about a good, not too expensive, air purifier or cleaner to help with the bunny smell? Or any suggestions on how to keep it under control (other than just cleaning the litter very regularly). Thanks!

If your bunnies are spayed/neutered and you clean out the litter regularly (as you mentioned), smell shouldn’t be much of a problem. In fact, most people who come to my apartment remark how surprised they are that my bunny doesn’t smell or anything.

My buns are both spayed/neutered, but they still have a very noticeable smell to them. This is mainly due to the fact that my lovely bonded pair never regained total litter habits and have resisted all my training attempts to get them back to using the boxes 100%. Which, means constant vinegar cleaning. But, even without that smell, they can release a pretty intense bun smell when they run around chinning/tails up in the air excited.

Honeywell makes a very cheap air purifier, I believe I paid $40 for mine. But, the smells tend to go away after a few minutes if they do release a scent, even with nothing running/no windows open. So, cleaning a lot and using a very good litter (like WSP) would be your best bet.

It wouldn’t be safe in very cold weather. I don’t think an air purifier or cleaner would be very good for your rabbits respiratory system.

We have an HIPPA air purifier from germguardian. We only got it because the house we bought is really old and we didn’t want to take the chance of inhaling impurities. But it seems to help because it also has carbon in it which eliminates odors. But before we got the purifier I never noticed Sally’s scent.

You can make your own carbon filter if you want all you need is a fan to circulate the air and carbon the air will flow through and it eliminates odors really really well. You can find everything u need at a hardware store. If you are only wanting to eliminate odors building a carbon filter would really be the cheapest bet and it doesn’t add any fragrances into the air.

You can get a purifier that doesn’t emit fragrance or anything so it won’t hurt their respiratory system. It just eliminates like dust, pet dander, mold spores, smoke, and odor Stuff like that.

Your best bet is to do frequent animal maintenance and have them spayed and neutered and you shouldn’t have an issue with them smelling up your house.

My bunny doesn’t smell at all! Close to litter box cleaning day (every 3 days for me) I can notice a slight smell but that’s it. Nothing that’s really like “EW gross!” just a little aroma.

I have an air purifier for other reasons (house mate is allergic), and I have a Honeywell HHT-011. It has an ionizer option which I don’t suggest using – apparently they’re bad for you and gather weird particles on your ground. It’s nice because it has a permanent filter so you don’t need to buy expensive new ones. It was about $80 with shipping I believe, but I’m sure it would be half price if you bought it in stores. (I don’t have a car so it was difficult for me to go get one.)

Thanks for all the great suggestions! I’ll probably go to Canadian Tire and look at what they’ve got (they have a lot of the Honeywell purifiers). I’m sure I can find one for fairly cheap, or build a carbon filter! Thanks a ton!

Buns poo and pee do have a distinct smell and even if litter is changed everyday and accidents cleaned everyday; someone with a sensitive smell can easily smell it (at least I can). In their home area, hay is typically what I smell more of; bunny breath typically smells like hay too. There are some litters that contain baking soda and I’ve found it helpful. Also, I just recently did a scrub down cleaning with baking soda, in addition to pure vinegar which I normally use, and I’ve found a dramatic difference. I’m thinking of using baking soda regularly now (except now it smells like baking soda).

Sorry can’t help you with an air purifier or cleaner but if you are really concerned, make sure you have a good vacuum with a good filter.

There is nothing in a purifier to hurt a rabbit’s respiratory system. You don’t want to use ionizers (almost all purifiers include a on/off switch if they have an ionizer function) because it does release particles into the air which has been linked to certain small animal health issues (especially parrots and animals that are EXTREMELY sensitive to particles/fumes). A purifier is basically just a fan with an air filter in it though.
