I got my little girl spayed today, it was more nerve racking then I thought it would be (I’m sure the vet had a good laugh at all my questions and this and that), and she’s home, she is obviously still shaken a little, but she seems to be quite uncomforable. I’ve gotten her to eat a little oats and some dried fruit but no hay and not pellets yet, she’s only been home about an hour and half though. I’m just wondering about suggestions to make her more comfortable or anything I should know.

Hi Heather – did your vet give you some pain medication to give her?

Females take about 3 to 4 days to fully recover from a spay. I would advise that you try giving her some fragrant greens – pinch them to release their fragrance.

You may have to hand feed her with some critical care – ask your vet about this too – tomorrow since it’s Saturday if you did not get any.

The last thing she will probably eat is her pellets.

Keep her area free from drafts and really just let her rest. She has been given some very strong pain medication and the anesthesia which can take at least overnight to wear off.

Most rabbits are very quiet right after the spay and just want to be left alone.

I’ll definiatly try feeding her some oats by hand, that seems to be her absolute favorite thing to eat besides the organic dried fruit I feed them. I have a good animal supply store, but the vet didn’t give me anything.  They vets around here aren’t as knowledgable as the Binky Bunny forums , so I just had to find the one I thought would do the best, and best I can tell she’s stiched up good . My house is natually cool I wonder if she might be cold, I’m always afraid to put a towel or anything in there for her to lay on cause my rabbits always seem to eat things they should. She has been abnormally friendly, so I think my poor baby has had a rough day. I can’t ever thank you guys enough for being somewhereI know I can always get answers

Heather can you ask your vet to give her some metacam? This is a non-steroid anti-inflammatory and is safe for rabbits. Can you call them tomorrow to ask if they will prescribe some to her.

I’m not sure if they are open it’s 7 here so they are definitely closed for the day, though they may be open tomorrow.

Anesthesia can interfere with an animals ability to regulate their body temp- so if you think she could be cold- you could put a pop bottle with hot water (make sure it is comfortable to you to touch) near her to lay against.  Just make sure to take it out when it gets room temp- as that will cool her down as room temp is colder than their body temp.

Your vet maybe open tomorrow- call to ask about pain meds.

It took my female a bit to bounce back from her spay.  The night of she barely nibbled her fresh greens- and it took a day or 2 to get her back to herself- even with pain meds.

You could always try soaking some pellets in warm water and feeding that as a mush.  But it is very typical their appetites are not normal after surgery- but since you KNOW that is the reason- just keep and eye on her and keep offering her favorites to tempt her to eat.

hey breathing’s still a little labored, but she’s ate some butterleaf lettuce and has seemed to calm down quite a bit. Still no poops and her pan’s still dry I cringed as I stuck my hand in to see if it was wet, but luck and unlucky it wasn’t lol. She’s cleaning herself now a lot I hope she doesn’t bother her wound any. Her stitches are inside but like most things I’m sure if a rabbit can do something awful it’ll probably mine that figure it out I’ll keep a close eye on her tonight and hope for a better feeling bun tomorrow.

I’m pleased to report my baby is much better today. Now I just have to give her a few weeks and I can start trying to bond them again. Never went well before she was fixed, hopefully it will be smoother this time. Thanks again my bunny encyclopedia’s!!!!
