After sick behavior

Hi guys,

I’m new to this forum and not sure if this question should go here but I’m going to give it a shot.  My long story short is last Saturday we had an ER vet visit and after 5 medications and critical care he is started feeling better by Sunday evening.  i.e: he is running around the house, flopping, eating, drinking.  But our vet wants us to continue to give him the meds for the next week and then check up in two weeks.  Now that he is more active giving him the meds has been difficult, since he doesn’t want to take them we get to wrap him in a bunny burrito and syringe feed him, in which he is very unhappy.

I’m mainly wondering if anyone has ever had trouble bonding with their rabbit again after a sickness?  He seems to not want us around and won’t take food or pets from us.  He was very loving before and loved to chase his daddy around the living room.  I’m just wondering if he’ll never be the same and won’t love us like he used to?

Any input would be appreciated.

I suspect he’ll get over it. He knows where his food comes from. Animals tend to be much more forgiving than people 🙂
Everyone has their favorite way of medicating rabbits, I guess, but I like to kind-of mush my guys right to the floor, holding the scruff with one hand and, with a few contortions, I can work the syringe into the mouth and the feet are kind-of trapped between them and the rug and I can typically get most of the meds in pretty quick and easy.

I JUST went through this. Mine hated (with a passion) getting his meds. He is starting to come back around. We ended the meds last week and two days ago he let me pet him again. He will get over it but you may need to get back on the floor with some treats and kinda start from the beginning with bonding like you did when you first got him. He shouldn’t take as long to come around as he did the first time, but you may need to build up the trust again. At least that is what I am finding. So hard. I wish they understood that we were taking care of them, not torturing them! Goodness.

Thank you both of you for getting back to me. Kbana I’m glad I’m not the only one who has to go through this! That makes sense about building the trust. He’s letting us pet him but he’s still not too happy about the whole thing. He started chasing his daddy again tonight so I think things are getting better. I hate it when we’re giving the meds and he cries about taking them! It kinda makes me feel like we’re torturing him.

Yes, unfortunately sometimes giving meds is necessary, and you can’t exactly explain that you’re doing it for his own good… But fortunately, their memories are relatively short and they do get over it!

I hope he’s feeling better soon!
