*ADVISE PLEASE* neuter wound abnormal?

Sorry I’m new here so I’m still trying to figure out how this works, but I just wanted to sign up so that I could post a photo of my rabbits recent neuter wound site as I don’t think it looks how it should.

Mylo is 7 months old and was neutered 6 days ago. He really didn’t handle it very well and had to be taken back to the vet for gut stimulant as he wouldn’t eat.

He has since been eating herbs and some hay on his own, pooping and peeing and drinking aswell but he still hasnt touched his pellets. 

I checked his neuter wound site tonight and I’m quite worried as on the right handside of the photo he appears to have what looks like a large scab?  And it looks different to the other side of the neuter site.

Here’s a photo if it helps, (sorry its not in focus he was trying to wriggle out of my arms)

Any help or advise would be great. I do have Baytril here to give him incase of infection, but I will hopefully get him to the vets first thing Monday morning. He doesn’t seem to be acting in pain, this morning he was running around and binkying so I’m not going to panic just yet.

I don’t mean to scare you and it is a bad picture but that really looks like necrosis to me. If I were you I would take your bun to a rabbit savvy vet immediately. Was the vet you used familiar with rabbits? You can find a list of rabbit savvy vets on the HRS site here: http://www.rabbit.org/vets/vets.html.

Good luck. The fact that he is eating is a really good sign but I would get this checked out by another vet if I were you. That does not look like a normal heal to me at all.

He definitely needs to be seen by the vet on Monday.
I would suggest you email that photo to your vet (it’s a very good shot) and leave a message with her voicemail or service, whatever she checks after hours, and ask her to check her email asap to see the photo. You can say you are planning on getting the next possible appointment on Monday unless she feels this is an emergency, in which case ask her to call you right back to discuss. Then call the practice and ask for an appointment for as soon as their office can take you during normal hours.

I would definitely take your bun in to be looked at right away. Neither of my boys incisions ever looked anything like that. Are you sure the vet you took him to was a rabbit-savvy vet? If not, I would suggest looking at the rabbit-savvy vets listed in the Info section of this website and finding one that can help you heal your little boy properly!

I’ve just managed to get him in at a different vets this morning (Sunday).
He’s basically opened up his wound, the vet was really helpful and said he needed to remove that dark piece of flesh and stitch him back up. He will be sent home with painkillers and given gut stimulant.
He said they were full for operations next week but he’s going to clear his schedule today and do the op today.
Please keep your fingers crossed for my little man, he’s been through so much already this week!

Awww, poor little Mylo! Sending him lots of healing vibes through his procedure today!

I’m sure he’ll be just as good as new when he’s done! I would definitely keep a closer eye on him if he opened up the wound himself. Sometimes these buns are little hellions and he may do it again.

It’s very important to check any surgical incisions once a day. I hope he recovers quickly. Please keep us updated.

Thanks everyone for your support.

I got him home at about 5:30pm my time and it did take him a long time to come round from the anaesthetic.

The weird black lump had been removed and he’s al neatly stitched up again.

He’s also been sent home with antibiotics just as a precaution for infection, he’s also got 5 days worth of metacam.

It’s now 5:10am in the morning in the UK. I’ve been up all night with him gently putting my hand under his chin when I can see him starting to fuss over the new wound.

Does anyone have any ideas about how I can stop him opening up the wound again? I’m not going to be able to stay awake 24/7 for this whole week but he is such a nibbler!

And yes that’s my little man in my avatar, he’s got such a cheeky little face

Can you get one of those cones from your vet? If not, I know you can buy them at pet stores. It might be worth the investment to insure he doesn’t nibble at the sutures if they are already irritated. He will probably hate it but it would be better than another scare.

I agree. He may need a cone. My Mini-Rex had to have one after his neuter. It’s sad to put it on them, but if he’s a consistent wound opener, he will need one.

In most cases, rabbits don’t need an E-collar after surgery, but it’s not unheard of for a persistent nibbler to need one. The vet should be able to give you one.

I got one from my vet for our boy and girls incisions for free — I would just call them up and say you’re really worried about it and I’m sure they’ll easily give you one! I would keep an eye on him with the E-Collar for a bit after you put it on him. I know with my buns it did more bad than good (it stressed them out to the point where I felt their safety was in danger since they kept tripping and falling flat on their faces and it just freaked them out to the point where they kept ramming their faces into the ground) BUT if your bun keeps messing with his spot you may not have a choice. You can also watch to see if he’s licking the wound or kind of biting or nipping or pulling at it. My buns would lick it gently but neither of them pulled.

WOW-you did the right thing getting him to the vet so quickly. Glad he’s doing well!

See if you can get an e-collar from the vet. One for a small dog fist well usually. You’ll get the stinkeye while he gets used to it but it’s only for a few days.

Hi, It’s been a few days now, and I want to add how glad I am that he was taken in asap by your vet. Has he needed the cone or is he leaving it alone now? How is his recovery coming along?
