So at what age is a rabbit (Netherland Dwarf in particular) an adult? I’ve read differing opinions about this so am wondering what everyone here thinks.

For some context, I’ve been feeding Kurotta alfalfa based pellets (didn’t know it was alfalfa based – I got recommended by a well known rabbit breeder in the area), and after finding out that it is too high in fat and protein while being low in fibre for adult rabbits, I bought the Oxbow adult rabbit feed for him. The info at the back of the packaging recommends the feeding amount based on rabbits aged 1 year and above though, and Kurotta is just 8 months.

So is he actually an adult rabbit and should he be eating the Oxbow pellets only? Or can I mix in the alfalfa based pellets? I still have about 3kg of that and really don’t want to waste it, but if it’s necessary to stop feeding him that (apart from using it for transitioning so the sudden change doesn’t upset his tummy), then I would probably try to sell it off.

Rabbits should be weaned off of alfalfa between 6 to 8 months, depending. Timothy or other grass hays are much better for adults After being weaned onto adult pellets, the amount given should be on weight not on age. 1/8th to 1/4th cup per every ~6lbs of rabbit.

We weighed him that day and he was about 800 grams. I’m not too sure if that’s the ideal weight for his age and breed though…

Adult nethies can be between 1.5lbs (~680grams) and 2.5lbs (~1100grams) to be considered healthy weight

8mo and 800g is within a reasonable range as noted above, but you’ll want to examine your specific rabbit’s size to figure out whether it’s normal for your rabbit.

Wick’s max weight/normal weight is now 1000g or slightly less, and that’s healthy for him. He is 1.5yrs old, and I remember there were times when he weighed only 600-700g. What a cutie.

                  Alright thanks Mikey and Wick

Kurotta is currently quite small in size (at least I think so lol). He does look like he could still grow. I think I’ll check him again when he’s a year old – that may be a better gauge.
