Davey and Delilah have been acting very strange lately, they still love getting their pettings, but thave just been jumpier and more skiddish than usual. She has really started nudging alot mor and alot harder than she used to, and when I was laying on the floor with her tonight, and occasionally for the past week or so, she goes to my legs/butt and nudges and nips at me, although tonight she actually nipped quite hard and it actually bled a little, not a bug nip at all but it still surprised me and hurt too! Is this just cause their getting older (just turned 1 ish at beginning of april)? Could it be her trying to like hump me or something, she nips at him to before she does that to him? I dont know it was just weird and theyre just being strange! She is getting pickier with the treats she gets which is really odd too cause she used to be waiting before the bag even opened?

Are they both shedding or coming into a shed? This can sometimes make them sensitive I’ve noticed, others have reported this too.

Around 1 year old is when bunnies go through a lot of changes. As far as the nipping, it sounds like she is just trying to demand pets from you, are you petting her when she digs at you and nips you? This is exactly what my bunnies to do me to demand pets, they will dig at me a couple seconds to let me know they want pets, and then if I don’t comply I get nipped so if I’m not going to be petting them, I usually need to get out of their teeth range! It took my bunnies a a few months though to get that comfortable with me that they started digging and nipping, so that sounds about right that they would start that behavior now.

Also, buns don’t often realize that the big pink naked rabbits they live with are more delicate than they think.  A nip that would barely get the attention of another bun will make you bleed.  Pepper was very nippy when I first got her, and I used the techniques from ‘The Language of Lagomorphs” to understand what she wanted and to “talk” back.  Making a loud EEEK noise when she nipped too hard, or a thump or even giving her the human-butt and she learned to be more careful around me.  She will still nip hard if really provoked (got me on the boob when I tried to pick her up last night) but she never breaks the skin.

VERY true-small nips even though painful, they are generally not maliscious-they nip often when grooming or being amorous with other bunnies and it wouldn’t hurt the bunny-so they aren’t meant to be bites in that sense.

Yep – I knew she thought she was just getting my attention and didn;t realize that she was hurting me.  But I helped her figure out what was acceptable, and now even under extreme provocation she only nips to hurt/startle not to damage
