Hi All!   Can anyone recommend acidophilus tablets that they have used for there buns and how much?  Also where you may have pruchased them?  It is  recommended giving this before and after spay and I’m not sure what to look for and how much I should even give. Many thanks

I’ve given mine a brand called American Health and I just give one tablet a day when I gave it.

They do have expiration dates on them and some people use them as treats.

You want to make sure you get a lactose free brand which American Health is – I’ve found them at Central Market and Whole Foods if you have either of those stores.

They come in Strawberry, Banana, and Blueberry.

so you have a bunny girl???

I might have missed some of your posts…, did you take her to the vet yet??? Is he Rabbit Savvy???

I have never heard of these tablets to be given to bunnies. Do you need to give those on a regular basis?

I’m sorry, but I don’t have no advise on this. hopefully, the more bunny knowlegdable guys will read this…

do you have a date set for her spay?

Actually the acidophilus tablets are something that the House Rabbit Society is now recommending for pre and post spays and neuters – I’ve never done this before but it cannot hurt.

I don’t remember them suggesting this in the past and was surprised to read it – I had not looked at the spay/neuter pages for a long time and saw they updated them with this recommendation.

I don’t know of any vets that recommend this but I’m not sure since I’ve had rabbits for awhile.

Yes I did post it under my original post. Went for checkup and she is def a she!! Good health etc. Not sure about how savay the doc was on buns bc she still did not really answer my question on how old my buns might be. Never mentioned anything about the tablets etc before spay etc also. She did say her teeth (molar spurs) in the back need to be filed down sometime this year before it could cause a problem. They don’t spay rabbits…well they were not sure bc she had to ask another doc that was not in. I think I may bring my buns to MSPCA Boston. Huge hospital and I think I would feel better bc they have everything! I just did not feel right about the whole thing even though I love them there for my cat. Even the tech was not aware of how to pick up my buns so I told him not to LOL you should have seen his face when he came in and saw a rabbit. That right there tells me this may be the first they have had a rabbit in.

The date for the spay may have to wait till I get back on the 12th of July. I just hope she is not prege already. I wish I could bring her in right away but I leave on the 28th and am not sure if that is enough time for recovery before I leave and if something were to happen were she does not eat etc. The doc said she did not feel anything but it could also be early. She did mention her nipples looked big that she may have had baby buns before. Worries me whoever had her may have left her again with a male buns. No way she could have met a wild buns bc she looked like she was dumped that day. To many coyotees etc for her to survive even a night so chances are slim. I’ll keep you all posted.

Here are some vets in Massachusetts if you don’t have this list:

Umn…Can I have more info? People give them as treats? Do you think that’s a good idea? Is it just basically a probiotic? Should I buy some? 😮

Sarita yes I saw it listed also on HRS and thought I should get some. My vet never mentioned them. Hmmmmm

it doesn’t sound like your vet is the right vet for the bunny. she seems to not really know what’s going on, at least from what you said. i’d continue your vet search.

Well don’t worry if they don’t mention the acidophilus tablets before the spay – at least she caught the molar spurs.

I would look at that list though because I saw a recommended vet in Boston and it might be worth emailing the House Rabbit Network as well.

Beka27 yes I agree. I’m going with my gut on this one and will bring her to the MSPCA Boston. I feel better brining her here bc they have bunnies they adopt out and do routine spay and nuters.

it doesn’t hurt to gather more info too. it’s better to have a list of a few possible vets as alternatives just in case.

OMTW Beka27 are our buns related? *smiles* they sure do look alike!

Sarita I may just give them a call to find out more info.

                                    sarita:

yeah, I’ve never heard of those acidophilus being given to a bunny. haven’t been on the spay/neuter pages of HRS either in a LONG time [shame on me]. I had to give “benebac” at one time, but that was years ago. and I think, they actually use this more for cats and dogs…

I just know, acidophilus is good for hoomins. For the bunnies, tho, do you give the chewable tablets?

I’m sure, my bun would go for the banana flavor

as long as that stuff don’t hurt them…unfortenately I don’t have a rabbit savvy vet in my area here. its just all for dogs and cats or farm animals

                                    bunykins:

I’m glad your holding off on her spay for a while. I hope she’s not pregnant either!! wow!! that would be something. But I DO know, that a spay can be really hard on a bunny girl, they must really be in a lot of pain after the spay, and I have heard of recoveries taking 4 to 6 weeks. so its a good idea to wait until after you’re back. just in case. you really never know.

and that vet doesn’t sound like a good bunny rabbit vet AT ALL. jeez. they should at least know, how to pick up and hold a bunny. but there is so many bad vets out there, you really just need to be careful, and ask LOTS of questions. and make sure they see bunnies often, and they do spays and neuters often as well. since you really need a rabbit savvy vet for a spay, cuz the anesthesia alone can be very tricky in the bunny rabbits…

I hope, you’ll find a good rabbit savvy vet!!

                                    hay, say hi to bunykins

                                    she’s SOOO CUTE!!

                                    *hugs*
