A summer home (xpen) for Jersey and Rumball

I’m thinking I will need to set up an ex pen in my living room for them to be in the hot months. Their room they currently have is getting warm fast. They use to be more free roam and move themselves to cooler areas. But with Jerseys poor litter habits, I can’t keep up with cleaning if I let them roam. Nor can I  allow them to have the whole room 24/7 because the flooring will be destroyed. They will get time out of the pen of course and I allow them to go outside most days when suitable.

To put on the base of the pen, Ive been considering in investing in some incontinence bedding materials made for humans.  Or similar thing made for pets. Vet Bed maybe? 

Under that I would probably use vinyl or some other waterproof floor protector. Jersey and Rumbal don’t really chew fabrics, especially when kept flat.

Has anyone done this before?

Or am I better off making something up myself, like sewing several layers of fleece together?

 

I need a lot of absorbency. Currently the pee runs on the tile and they track thru it and it’s a constant battle to keep it cleaned.

I know the pen will get as messy as their current set up and I need to treat this as if Im setting it up for incontinent rabbits.

I’d love to hear (or see) what others have done.

cosie became incontinent near the end of her life. i used goodnites disposable bed mats. they’re meant to go on a bed-wetting kid’s mattress so the pee doesn’t ruin it. cosie was lethargic and thus not into eating or ripping it apart…not sure if that will be an issue for your buns. also, i don’t know if they’re available in australia.

The rescue uses reusable cloth baby diapers sewn to fleece and it’s is super absorbent. They use that in all of their litter boxes. The one time Bunjamin was there he picked up on it really fast which I didn’t expect him too. Also look into maybe what hospice care uses? I know a lot of people are incontinent towards the end and they might have something they put on their beds?

Sleepy, im pretty certain Ive seen them here. Are they the full size of a childs bed? Only thing is Jersey and Rumball are pretty active and I can forsee them pulling it up. Unless its really big and I can fix it down somehow…

FF, what side up do you place the diaper/fleece pads? Or is it fleece each side with diaper fabric in the centre?
The hospice style thing is what I was initially thinking to use but having looked at prices, idk. I’d have to get enough to have replacements while the soiled ones are in the wash.

The vet bed looks good and comes on a roll too but I’m wondering if they’d get too hot on it.

I have some ikea cotton mats I use for them and they do ok job. Maybe I should look into those thick cotton bath mats?

I think she does fleece side up so their feet aren’t in urine. But I think some of them have fleece on both sides. I can get more information if you’d like. I imagine the Hospice style ones won’t be cheap.

they’re not the full size of the bed…maybe half a twin bed? because really, you wouldn’t need it to cover the whole bed in a child’s case. the four corners each have a square of sticky stuff so you can secure it to whatever’s under it, but i imagine they’d still be able to pull up the middle.
