We had an adoption show this weekend in Santa Cruz at the PetsMart there (5 adoptions, yay!).  While we were in the middle of our show, talking to prospective adopters, a woman runs in carrying a rabbit in a tiny wire cage.  She places the cage on the floor outside of our adoption area, and runs out to the parking lot.  People saw her leaving and tried to catch her, but she sped off in her shiny new SUV.  Obviously we could not leave the rabbit there and we were not going to take him to the shelter, so now we have another bunny in our system to care for.  No donation to cover his expenses, no thank you, nothing.  Just like taking cans to the curb on recycling day.

That is just disgusting. What is wrong with people? Like there are rescues and she could of handed her bunny over in a more approatiate way. I guess some people are just plain ignorant and only think about themselves.

How was the poor little bunny if she just left them I bet the poor thing never got the proper care. Its bad to say but thank goodness u guys were there or who knows where the poor little bun would of ben let.

Ew, how awful! I can’t believe how irresponsible some people are.  If she’s got a shiny new SUV the LEAST she could have done would be to leave a donation!

I have heard its illegal to abandon an animal in California, is that correct? I saw a sign on my way back from Utah to California that said something like $2000 fine for animal abandonement right when we crossed the border – if so, its too bad no one caught a license plate number!

It is absolutely illegal to dump a domestic animal in the wild in California.  However, I know of at least one shelter around here that has decided that they are "full" and are no longer taking owner surrenders.  So if someone wants to turn a rabbit in, the shelter says go away, then they dump them in the park next door.  Crazy.

That is just brutal that animals are being dumped and you think the shelter would catch on and do something about it. Its just sad if you ask me

If they do this to get rid of an animal I wonder how they get rid of other stuff? They are probably one of those people that dump stuff along the highway at night, or steal stuff from the store..that type of person.

So sad and so unfair to that bun. What did you end up doing with it?

That just infuriates me! I know that sometimes circumstances make it impossible to keep a pet but a RESPONSIBLE person with some compassion would try to place that animal in another home or make some sort of arrangements for the animal. That woman should be charged with something.

Wow, now that’s a new one! Some people are just nuts. I just shake my head in utter confusion when I hear stories like this. At least she didn’t just dump her bunny in some field, but what gets me is when people get an animal, and don’t research more to figure out solutions. There’s boards like this one all over, there’s information all over the net to help solve some of the challenges that pets can bring. They just see the animal as some lesser thing. They are living emotional beings that we share this earth and life with that we have taken responsibility for. All I have to say is what I always say……ECH!!!

how upsetting! I hate people who think animals are disposible and don’t have feelings.

We’ve had that happen before at a show too – a guy said he was going to the bathroom and never came back. He dumped Veronica and another bunny. It was heartbreaking. The bunnies were VERY overweight and clearly had been neglected, so the good thing is they now have much happier and healthier lives.

Awww, poor thing How is it doing?
It’s pathetic that people think that pets are so disposable. As soon as they’re bored of them, they do whatever they can to get rid of them. I suppose that was a better action than leaving the bunny at a high-kill shelter or letting them loose in the wild, but… still. Unbelieveable!
Can you think of a good reason why the bunny was left behind? There’s nothing more frustrating than seeing somebody give up on an animal as soon as it develops a small problem just because they weren’t persistent enough to look for a solution.
Aghhh, I’m so irritated now. Let us know what happens with the bunny

well, i guess that is not so bad guys. she actually brought it in to you. plus, she would rather give it up then have it suffer under her care.
at the rescue by me, the lady told me they found a baby bunny TAPED inside a shoebox in the middle of a parking lot, completely malnourished. now thats terrible.
not saying that what this lady did was acceptable, but now this bunny has a chance to have a loving home-
                                (prayers for bunny!)

This is Rhett, the bunny who was dumped and started this thread.  He is actually a beautiful brown rex, this picture does not do him justice.  He was adopted by his foster mom a few weeks ago.
