Hi everyone, I have a little mini lop buck, Thumper, who is not neutered and is 8 months old. I want to get him a friend, but I want a French lop? Does size matter? Also, what gender would it have to be? Is it really necessary to get Thumper neutered? Any help would be great !!!

Hi Kabaam and welcome to Binky Bunny. I have a little Netherland Dwarf named Thumper too!!

Now to the bonding, size nor breed matters…their are some odd pairs out there. However, it is known to be easier to bond male/female pairs and yes, he should be neutered at least three to four weeks before bonding. The other rabbit should be neutered/spayed also.

Rabbits are very territorial in nature and neutering/spaying helps decrease the hormonal urges and curb bad behavior.

I am just learing myself and am sure that other more well informed people will chime in and steer you in the right direction.

In the meantime, when you get a chance, can you post a pic of your cutie?

What TM said – she hit it on the head. I am not sure where you are, but you may also want to check with local shelters and see if they offer a bunny bonding program as well as speed dating services. Both were invaluable for me.

i’ll chime in here… i can say from experience that putting unaltered buns together is t-r-o-u-b-l-e lol.  i had 2 unspayed females at one time.  unfortunately for me (& them) i didn’t have the benefit of this website & i thought the 2 would be best of friends.  wrong.  we ended up being a happy, all-be-it dysfunctional family with the buns having to have seperate ‘out & play’ times.  not what i had originally hoped for.

aside from easier bonding, you’ll likely have less pee & poo marking issues, and neutering & spaying has health advantages too i think.   good luck… and yes please for the pics

Hi kabaam – welcome to binky bunny!

You’ve gotten some great advice from Thumpers Mom & babybunsmum. I’m really glad to hear that you’re now planning to get Thumper neutered.  After he’s neutered he likely would be very happy to have a friend.  Rabbits are highly social and most really like having a bonded friend. A lot of rabbit rescues will help you with bunny match making and the bonding process.  Most rescues will also only adopted our bunnies that are spayed and neutered, so it will be a big cost savings to you.

Since rabbits are still considered an exotic pet, many vets are not knowledgable enough to give them proper care.   Below is a link of vets that see rabbits, which should help you can find a competent vet  in your area:

Thanks for all the help. Thumper has been neutered for a while now, and the doe (I have given a picture of her in another forum) is starting to bond with him. I have given her the name Savannha, random, but i liked it.
