My bunny chatters his teeth all the time. At first it was only when I was petting him. But now, I’ve noticed that he’ll lie down and be chattering his teeth on his own. I know it can be a sign of pain so I’m a bit nervous, but he’s not showing any other symptoms of pain? He eats and drinks but he chatters his teeth A LOT. He’ll be lying down and just chatter away. It’s pretty quiet, if he’s not right next to me and I’m watching TV I can’t hear it, but when I pause it, I can hear it.

Is he a young bunny? Young bunnies often tooth purr out of sheer contentment. It’s absolutely fine and just means you have a happy bun. More mature rabbits tend to reserve tooth purring for when they’re getting pet.

If a bunny teeth chatters from pain, there are other signs as well. Like the bun sits all hunched up and looks very uncomfortable or shifts position restlessly and presses its tummy against the floor like it’s doing push ups.

Monitoring healthy behaviors like eating, being active, etc is good, but there are times when a rabbit will be in discomfort, but the health behaviors won’t be affected until it’s more severe. For example, Wick gets a molar grinding once per one to two months. At each time he needs it, he never stops being active and such, but small things will be off with good behavior.

Any changes in his poop size or frequency?

Sometimes rabbits will chatter to themselves in relaxation though.

The minute Bombur starts getting pet he will chatter the whole time. And when he was under 2-4 months old he would chatter just laying next to me.

My bunnies chatter quite a bit, they did a lot when they were younger too. Really loudly! But like you, they showed no other signs to make me think they were in pain or discomfort. I think some buns are just louder.

He is a young bunny, so maybe that’s it! His poops have been pretty standard, but I’ll keep an eye out. Thank you everyone!
