› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › A lot of Q.
I feel like I have been asking a LOT of questions latley, so i deside to make a forum with more than one question in it.
1. salt blocks.
The people i got Lulu from said that she was licking me for the salt and that you should put a salt block in her cage, so i did, but that was a while ago… Now it doesn’t seem like a salt block would be healthy, would it? Sense they are not preditores they shouldn’t lick you for the salt should they?
2. Hay.
When ever I take out hayfrom my hay bin and put it in there litter box, hay falls all over the floor and i don’t sweep it up right away and my mom gets mad when she see’s hay all over. So my Question is, how do i get hay from my hay bin to the litter box.
3. Hay rack.
I would like to give my bunny’s a hay rack now that they are litter trained, but I would like to make it out of a NIC grid, how do you make one?
4. bunny setup. ![]()
I thought i have found the perfect setup but my mom went in my room today and thought it took up to much space! She wants my to put Lulu on the top shelf of mocha’s condo again! (Just for at night, but still!) what do i do!!!
Thank you for reading!

All animals like to lick things that are salty. Some undividual animals more so than others. All living organisms need salt, but there is salt in the pellets your rabbits get so you don’t have to supply a salt lick, it won’t harm them, though. Stay away from the brown mineral licks but I provide mine with a salt lick by their water supply. I only have one rabbit who uses it. Within one year, she consumed an entire wheel of salt. however, rabbits who are on a pellet-free diet (hay/grass and vegetable) definitely need access to a salt lick.
Hay is very messy, I will suggest using a hay box instead of a grid rack and filling it right on top over your hay bin so anything that falls down, ends up back in the bin. I will attach a photo of a hay box. Don’t make an NIC rack, I use them and they are nice but messy.
Your mom is the boss, you are going to have to yield to her. It is fine for Lulu on the shelf as long as she also gets exercise outside her cage.. Plus, at some point you will buckle down and start cementing them as a pair and you will be able to give them a larger shared enclosure.
I will look for a picture of the hay box.
edit: this box is from save-a-bunny but you could build one like it.

i just feel that i can’t handle cementing them! i am very emotional and don’t do well specially at night. i contacted someone from the HRS or the Dane county humane society ( can’t remember witch one) and they asked me some questions and i emailed them back but they did reply and it has been awhile.
Even if you can’t do it yourself, the fact remains that once they have cemented — you can build them a bigger caged space ![]()
sorry what do you mean about the cage?
once they are bonded they will live in one condo together, so it can be bigger because you won’t need two enclosures any longer
yes but the thing is i don’t think i can bond them. i just break down when things don’t go right! i don’t think i can handle it. thats why i have been searching for places in WI that will help me!
i mean maybe i could try it again…. but i don’t know if they are ready to cement… are they? and if they chase a lot should i put them away or is chasing ok as long is there is no fights? and what about if lulu does the thing were she jumps over him to avoid him, does that mean i shouldn’t cement?
right. I get it. You will have someone else cement them. So I’m saying, till that’s done, cage them up like your mother wants you to, and after the cementing, revamp their habitats into one bigger new thing.
you see?
yeah… but i don’t get it. it seems that my buns are the only ones who chase all night. does that mean there not ready to cement? ( i am not sure if you saw the post right above yours it asked some Q about cementing.)
Mocha, you need to be sure of yourself when you go into cementing — no hesitation allowed. Lulu avoiding him means avoiding a confrontation, no reason to call off a meeting between them.
Have you done sessions, have they founght? Is this what took your confidence away?
our posts keepp crossing.

have you done an all-night session? Chasing is normal but I have not heard of two rabbits carrying on ALL NIGHT long.
I wanted to answer the hay transfer question – I have a tupperware type thing I got from Bed Bath & Beyond that I keep the hay in while it’s in the house (there’s a much bigger bin in the basement, but this one is small and manageable). I can put the little bin right into the cage, then pull out handfuls, so when it gets on the floor it’s only the floor of the cage and not all over the house.
Messy hay – http://smallanimalrescue.org/store/hayracks/
The rescue i work for makes these, I know a lot of people who swear by them. I made my own once but my bunneis chewed the wire, and my Rex would try and get inside it so i scrapped the idea, and hay is in our litter boxes (Which are actually the plastic rabbit age bottoms).
Salt Licks – I had one for my bunnies, and once for gerbils, each time they used it as a toilet…. lol
1. As petzy said, salt licks are not necessarily needed, but they can’t hurt. I just took mine away because noone used it and I read that it can aid in rusting metal so…
2. The way my setup is is I have a hay rack over my bunnies litter box. It opens to the outside so I can fill it without sticking my hand in their cage. I store the hay in the corner of my room and the hay rack opens to the same corner so I just pull some hay in every night and I don’t have to worry about it falling all over the place as I would if I had to carry it a longer distance.
3. I made my hay rack out of the side of their cage, some cardboard and a NIC grid. They way I did it was I put the NIC grid at about a 30- 45 degree angle to the side of the cage and tied the bottom on to the side of the cage with twine. I then tied cardboard triangles on the sides to keep the hay from falling out the sides. I also put cardboard over the NIC grid that is at an angle to the cage so that hay does not fall out there either. The bunnies do not eat the hay out of the slanted NIC grid they eat it out of the cage side if that makes sense. I like it because I can fill it from the outside and it is the most effective way to minimize the amount of hay lying around. Here is a picture of what it is basically like, this is not exactly mine but it is the same Idea.

4. My mom once complained about my setup, but I asked her why it was a bother to her. It is my room after all. She told me it was a nuisance having to walk over the cage to get to my cupboard to put my clothes away (I still don’t do my own laundry hehe). So I resolved with her that she could put my clean clothes outside my door in a laundry basket instead of climbing over everything. We have never discussed it since. I DO take a while to put the clothes away, and she sometimes complains about that, but otherwise we are good.
Tell your mom that it is your room and ask her why it bothers her that your bunnies take up so much space. How much time does she spend in your room? I mean if she goes in to put laundry in or something then offer to put it away instead. Also if she just tells you that she thinks bunnies don’t need that much space then just tell her that your bunnies spend their whole lives in that setup while you only need your room to sleep and change your clothes.
she doesn’t like it that my bad has hay on it… i don’t know why it bothers her if it doesn’t bother me but. i don’t know. she goes in my room like once a week. to put something in my room i left on the floor or something. i have NOT been good with cleaning my room lately that could be why. i should probably try to clean more. I have another Q. there is going to be really bad storms today like tornado weather and lighting and hale. will my buns be scared? should i put them in my basement?
We’ve had a lot of thunderstorms here lately (which is strange, because I don’t remember more than a couple in the 4 years I’ve lived here) and the buns haven’t been bothered at all. If there are actual tornado warnings I would move them down just for safety, but if it’s just a thunderstorm they’ll probably be ok. You can always watch them and if they seem to be getting too nervous move them downstairs.
OK. well they used to live out side so they should be used to it.
Your bunnies aren’t the only ones that chase all the time.. Moosie is always chasing Monkey during pen sessions. Little dork. I have had to ban my hubby from bonding sessions as he interferes even more than I do lol. He keeps separating them after the slightest little hop in Monkey’s direction ![]()
haha.. does he like monky better?
He grooms her non stop during cube sessions, so he does like her somewhat. They’re still trying to sort out stuff in larger spaces. Will just take time and persistance to get them bonded ![]()
i meant your husband.
lol! Monkey is the baby, hubby is always scared something will happen to her. She’s so tiny, she could get hurt by someone staring at her it seems
But, hubby also adores Moose. He can play with him for ages. So… I guess he kinda likes them both equally, just in different ways. he’s more protective of Monkey anyway.
aw thats cute! thats good he likes the bunnys.
He wasn’t sure if he would when I first thought of getting one. But now he is (almost) as addicted as I am ![]()
pretty soon he will be on here to ![]()
He says he doesn’t have to join, he gets all the info and stories he wants and more from me daily
hehe

I thought i have found the perfect setup but my mom went in my room today and thought it took up to much space! She wants my to put Lulu on the top shelf of mocha’s condo again! (Just for at night, but still!) what do i do!!!
My mom has given up on that! Lol. She is never in my room but she used to make those little comments about my bunny craziness. She has finally accepted that my room belongs to the rabbits and they let me sleep there. Over the weekend she actually helped me put up a bunch of wire shelves over the bunny pens to hold some of their stuff. And hopefully this weekend I can get her to help put some more in my closet, in the hopes of ditching my dresser and expanding bunny pens.![]()
And hopefully this weekend I can get her to help put some more in my closet, in the hopes of ditching my dresser and expanding bunny pens.
Haha thats what I did! I moved everything from my one dresser into my closet and then took the dresser out of my room to give the bunnies more space!
Its totally crazy! I dont think it will all fit, because I already have some of my clothes on shelves in my closet, so ill have to get rid of some clothes. But i really am not happy with their space so sacrifice must be made haha.
my dad built me wooden shelves in my closet, and i would put little bins on the shelves to put my clothes in. and next to my shelves is a pole to hang my clothes on.
That’s pretty much my plan, just crossing my fingers that it will all fit. By the way, where is everyone getting these adorable cartoon bunny drawings for their avatar? I want one!
a member on her was drawing them at one point, but she quit cuz she got to busy.

HAY RACK
Mocha seems to LOVE the hay rack i put in there! but it is so small i would really like to make one out of a NIC panle. but not like a square one but like the one you have Petzy. i really don’t care about the mess because i would put it above the litter box so it would all fall in the litter box.
this is my NIC hay rack then. You need one grid, 2 zipties at the bottom and one piece of wire or a carabiner for the top
I don’t have a good photo of it but you can see it in this video
so how would i atache that to my condo.
.jpg)
by the litterbox you can ziptie the grid to the wire mesh in two points at the bottom of the grid. Then attach the top part of the grid with one piece of wire, maybe 5 inches long. the wire will allow you lean the grid out as far as you’d like. Does this makes sense?
yes i think so. so you would zip tie one end to the wire and then you take wire and connect it to the wire and the nic panel so it is like at a angle?
yes. attach the bottom of the NIC panel with two zipties tight to the wire mesh of your rabbit condo, then lean out the NIC panel as far as you want and keep it at that angle by attaching a piece of wire between the panel and the condo meash. The further you lean the panel out, the more hay it will hold.
