A few questions (cat related)

Hello again. I KNOW, I KNOW I keep disappearing! Who knew my 30’s would mean I never have time for anything.

I’m not sure who remembers a few months back about what happened with my cat Tiger. Long story short he has to have his entire tail amputated and is now incontinent. 

I’ve been in close contact with my vet ever since. We’ve tried a few medications to help and his latest one (I can’t remember the name at the moment) helps a little. He no longer drops poo when he walks. But it didn’t do anything for his urinating everywhere constantly. Poor little guy wakes up and his whole side will be wet. For this reason, he has to spend the night in a crate which he hates.

He also suffers from urine scald frequently even with upwards of 3 baths a day. The constant bathing (just his butt and back legs most of the time) is causing his skin to be super dry and itchy. 

I’ve tried baby diapers as well as puppy diapers but so far he just wiggles out of them. 

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep a diaper on him and what I could use to soothe his urine scald (it is mild and usually around his genitals only). He does get a sanitary shave every 3 weeks but he still ends up with ouchies.

ive seen people make custom diapers that strap around the cats neck like a diper-bib. try making one of those

I’m sorry to hear he is having to go through this! Poor guy has been through a lot (and you too!). I’ve seen cat diapers similar to the ones Cinnabun mentioned online but don’t know much about them. They are machine washable and if anything like baby diapers will not be that hard to manage. The ones I saw are called “piddle pants”.

That is such a shame there are ongoing issues from that whole affair.
Is the incontinence a physical side effect from the surgery? Or is it anxiety/stress related from the whole ordeal?

The diapers Im seeing that the others mentioned look like overalls (coveralls?).

Im not really familiar with what is and isnt safe for cats. I know silver sulphadiazine cream is very good for rabbits with urine scald and sore hocks. Maybe that would be suitable for Tiger??

I don’t know if it’s doable for animals, but for people with spinal injury they do botox injections to make the bladder hold up liquids…. I wonder if it’s a thing for cats too?

The incontinence is both from the initial injury and the surgery. The initial injury caused severe nerve damage and then the surgery compounded the issue because of how high into his tail/back area they had to cut. 

I’ve used silver sulfadiazine cream on dogs before but I’m not sure if it is safe for cats. I will have to ask my vet about it. So far his only suggestion is to keep him extra clean (proven hard to do since he leaks urine constantly) and apply vaseline where he tends to get scald. 

I’ve bought reusable cat diapers but haven’t tried them with suspenders yet! I might give that a go and see if it keeps them on him.

So sorry to hear he’s having so much trouble. He’s a very lucky kitty to have you taking such good care of him. I wish I had some advice to be able to help.

He’s such a good cat. He doesn’t mind me bathing him a billion times a day or anything. My other cat would claw my eyes out if I even attempted to bath him. Lol.

I talked to the vet yesterday and he wants me to try 2% Chlorhexidine Shampoo to combat the urine scald. He also prescribed a safe barrier cream that I pick up tomorrow. I ordered some piddle pants (those things are EXPENSIVE!) and a few different types of diapers with suspenders to try on him.

Not sure what option you went with but saw ones called Tinkle Trousers that look like a good option. You use a removable pad with them so not having to wash the reusable diapers continually. I hope the ones you’ve ordered work out for him! If you have a small dog harness of similar design around, maybe put that on him a few times beforehand to get him used the feeling of the pants?

I went with piddle pants but looking at the tinkle trousers as well now. Lol. I have several cat harnesses from fostering he is used to being in a harness since I take him and Popcorn out into the yard when it is warm.

I think it will take him a long time to get used to wearing a diaper/pants. He is a super cooperative with most things. But I guess from the trauma he does not like anything touching his hind end. He won’t even let me pet him past the middle of his back.
