Rhine went back so he could meet the family that wants to adopt him.  I’m so happy for him!!!!

We’re brining home a pair today that are being returned to the shelter because they were chewing on cords after they were moved to the basement without much attention.  So, I vacuumed the whole house, cleaned all the floors,  have wiped down all the woodwork and the washer and dryer in the bunny area, bleaches and cleaned all the food dishes and litterboxes.  Here’s my questions.

        1.  I have an area rug on the floor in the laundry room so they don’t have to be on the vinyl when they are in their room.  Do I need to do anything to it or is vacuuming it enough?

        2. Can I use the same cardboard play house box I made for Rhine or should I build a new one when I get more boxes?

Just trying to be careful!  Let me know if I missed anything I should do before bringing in the new buns.  Thanks!

You could leave everything as is and run a test. Since the pair will be new to this territory (your house) the scent of Rhine lingering in cardboard or rugs should not cause them too much upset between them. If you see them getting hostile with each other you can quickly remove the items with Rhine’s scent on it.

I noticed last night that these buns LOVE to chew on things. So I gave them a cardboard house, 2 of those thick cardboard rolls from carpet and there are some boxes in between the washer and dryer so they can’t get behind them. I got up to see LOTS of big chewed holes, and chunks missing on the roles. To my surprise though, not a speck on the floor! Is this ok for them? Do I need to find new types of things for them to chew on?

Also, I noticed some poos that were strung together with hair. Is this something I should worry about? I asked the shelter what their diet was like and she said after they were adopted mainly pellets. I know that didn’t help. They haven’t eaten a ton of hay but both ate a handful together last night. I know extra hay, fresh water and veggies helps this. I’m going to introduce veggies after they are adjusted to the pellet change. I thought 2/3 cup would be a good amount for the 2 of them. I also know daily grooming will help but they are still afraid and I can’t groom them yet. Is there anything else I should be doing?

Sorry, I know, I’ve been paranoid since I lost Hugo. Thanks for all the help!

It sounds like the fur is going through their system so that’s a good sign. Mainly just lots of hay, activity and fresh water will help keep their gut moving.

Are you housing them in the laundry room? If they are such avid cardboard chewers, I would bunnyproof the backs of the washer/dryer with something other than boxes TODAY. It sounds like cardboard will not stop these two. I’d hate for you to wake up and have the cords completely eaten thru and the bunnies possibly in very bad shape.

You have some of those grids don’t you? Block the back of the machines off with those…you want to save your machines from this destruction as they are brand new…and you would be upset if something happened.

I was planning to move those boxes. Should I not let them have the cardboard play toys as well?

I would let them still have the cardboard toys – it sounds like it keeps them happy and occupied.
