I know it is always hard when we lose a beloved pet or family member. Someone on another forum mentioned that they were having a memorial orb made containing their dog’s ashes and I thought that it was a really cool idea. Here is the website for the company that does them

        http://www.blownhotglass.com/BHG/

I looked at their site and it seems like a really cool idea. They encapsulate the ashes in this orb so that you can always have them close by and even displayed if you want.

So do I. That company is in Oregon but it got me thinking about it and I know that there are a few glass blowers around here. We lost our family dog about a year ago now and even though I don’t have his ashes anymore, I think I might go up to the one that I know does custom pieces and see if they can’t blow me an orb maybe with his name in it as a memorial piece.

Hmm, that’s an excellent idea. I still have Winnie’s ashes in a box in my room, and I’m really not sure what to do with them. I’ll have to check into glass-blowers nearby.

This is pretty cool.  Something to think about in the future.  Unfortunately our babybun Keiran was barely five weeks old when he died, and his ashes are barely a splash on the smallest urn we were able to get.  I don’t think they can make much more than a bead out of that!  He’s on the mantleplace watching over our new home.

If you have oodles of cash, you can also have human or pet ashes converted to gem-quality diamonds and set in jewelry.

This discussion is actually coming just about at the right time. I will be getting Bailey’s ashes back soon, and I really wasn’t sure what to do with them, so these are all great ideas to consider. I’d also like to hear what more people have done.

I have also seen decorative urns and I also saw on TV the other night that you can now have the ashes of your loved one turned into a diamond that you can make a jewelry piece out of.

I decided that it would be nice to find a way to mix the ash with soil and plant something, like a bonsai (if you like to work on things), or bulb or flowering plant that comes up occasionally as a reminder, or something healing like aloe vera. I have heard that ashes don’t really mix in completely well for soil/plant food, but that there is something you can get that will be able to make the ashes work well as a nutrient. I have to investigate that further. I think, for me, having a living thing like some long-term plant that will last over many many years may be the way to go.

the orb is such a neat idea! i like the idea of the plant BB – i’ve always thought being buried under a tree would be a lovely thing.

gravehearted – I lean towards the tree idea too. I think because my folks decided to actually be buried underneath a tree, and they have a decided to have a bench/sitting area. I like that idea more than hanging out in a graveyard.

BB, I actually thought of you when I saw that and it is part of the reason I posted it here. My parents planted a rose bush in memory of Bear and I really do like the idea of having something living to look at and remember him.

BB… i sure hope you have a green thumb tho! it would be kinda sad to plant something and have it not do too well… you’d have to do some research for what is good in your area and not likely to fail.

                                  Angoragrl – thank you.

Beka – I know watcha mean. I actually really thought of that too. For me, I’d only be looking for something drought tolerant, like a succulent. I need to research to see how long aloe vera can last but we have a cactus and and a ficus tree in our sun room that my husband has had for 20 years.

I have a couple of memorial ideas-

1st- a custom glass bead necklace using a small portion of the cremains- this is a local artist in our area- that is how I have heard of her in particular.

                                    http://www.gghavens.com/

2nd- this is more appropriate for Dogs and Cats- a sterling silver paw print with (choice of color) enamel fill that is mixed with a small portion of your pet cremains.

                                    http://www.puppypaws.com/xcart/home.php?cat=111

this is another Puppy Paws product that is specific to bunnies- but no cremains are used but can be ENGRAVED.  (They have this in 14k gold also).  And this could make a good memorial with the engraving and the fact the they make a donation to rabbit rescue with every purchase.

15% from every Bunny item sold benefits the House Rabbit Society http://www.rabbit.org or the Great Lakes Rabbit Sanctuary. Free engraving is available for one name on the back of the pendant

                                    http://www.puppypaws.com/xcart/product.php?productid=3095&cat=99&page=1

Other things that I have done-  A cat that we got from my Grandparents farm got cancer (years later)- was euth and cremated.  On our next trip up North- we took Wiley’s cremains to the farm and buried them under the apple tree by their garden.  I also took 3 packages of catnip seeds with me and planted them over the cremains and in 2 other places (for the other cats there-as they are all relatives/ its a barn cat thing that I don’t approve of).  I thought he was FROM there, so I wanted to return him there.  Both my husband and I unboxed and unbagged his ashes before burying- so he would be “free”.  We got him as a 6 week old kitten and made him a house cat- and he made for the most heartbreaking and trying pet for me ever- inapprop urination, behavorial issues, cancer decisions, etc.  So it just seemed right to return him home.

I had a hamster that had to be euth- that was the most awesome hamster ever.  He had a deformed foot- so he was not active- but he was snuggly- he sat on my shoulder to watch TV.  I used to fall asleep reading in bed with him cuddled at my neck.  My husband and I sobbed like babies when he had to be euth after 8 months of owning him.  But we bought  a rose bush and buried him and planted the rose bush over him.  I always think of Schroeder when I see the rose bush in our yard.

If I had to choose a spot for a bunny- I think that maybe they would want to be buried by an apple tree.  Binkying Free with apple branches to chew and apples to eat…..

OK, enough for now- now I am sniffling a little.

                                    Julie

When my guinea pigs were alive, we would take them out to play and eat in the clover patch on the side of the house. After a while, they’d dart under the giant rose bush. I had many an injury getting them out (this thing was big, went all the way up a two story house and halfway down the lawn). When they passed away we buried them under there, as they seemed to enjoy being under there when they were with me.

When my beloved cat Ash died in October we got him cremated but his ashes came back in just a little wooden box. We found a website where you send pics of your pet and they will custom paint a ceramic urn for you. It turned out so beautiful and his markings are exact. It’s a little ceramic cat lounging on a cement block with his eyes closed. I’m not sure if they do rabbits but it’s a great way to keep your beloved cat or dog. I’ll try to get some pics of it and if they turn out I’ll post them.
