I heard my local spca has a lot of rabbits at the moment. I want to help but since I can’t adopt any right now I thought I would bring them a Christmas gift basket to make their Christmas a little brighter.

I can’t afford a whole lot, however, and we don’t have the best rabbit supplies in our petstores (and it’s too late to place an online order unfortunetly). So does anyone have any ideas of cheap things I could buy/make to put in the basket??

I would really appreciate some suggestions. Thanks a bunch!!!!

          Some cheapy ideas:

          1. Cardboard rolls from toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls (remove all the paper of course first.) So you can ask all your friends and family to save those rolls instead of throwing them away. Stuff the rolls with hay and a little treat inside, like those little dried fruits ("Just Carrots" "Just Strawberries", etc etc etc )

          2. Buy a bunch of brown paper lunch bags. Usually you can get 50 for a few bucks at any grocery store. Then use a hole punch to punch a bunch of holes in the bags. Then fill it with hay and a treat.

OP…. this is BinkyBunny by the way… I always come over here while I’m doing other stuff as admin, and I forget to sign in as BinkyBunny.

you could cut out cardboard squares, poke 2 holes in the middle, pile them up & tie with raffia to make verrry cheap chew & toss toys.

Buy some mason jar rings, notebook rings big enough to snap around jar ring and bells with the loop in the top that will fit a notebook ring or key chain ring through it. Sitck a bell on the key chain ring or notebook ring and place notebook ring or keychain ring around mason jar ring for a cool, cheap noisy toy.  Not my idea, I learned that from my local HRS.

That is a wonderful idea, LittlePuffyTail.  The rescue that I work with does this every year for the buns in 10 shelters in the Bay Area, plus all of our foster bunnies.  We have 350 bunnies this year.  As someone suggested, we give each bunny a paper bag with treats and toys in them.  My daughters and I are making the hay rolls that BinkyBunny suggested; these are cheap and fun to make.  We also give small treats, like the little heart cookies from Bunny Bytes and hay cakes.  Each bunny gets a toy of some sort too, like a little jingly cat ball or a barrel toy.  How good of  a sales person are you?  Would you be comfortable asking any local bunny oriented stores for donations?  Maybe a feed store could donate horse cookies that are rabbit safe, that sort of thing?  Even just a bag of oat hay, tied with a raffia string and a bunny cookie or a piece of dried fruit inside would be welcome, I’m sure.  Just be sure to clear it with the shelter staff first.

The bunnies go wild for these things, it is pretty funny to see.  Have fun with it!  Some pictures of our program last year can be seen on our website.

Just to add one to the other ideas – we made some gift baskets at our rescue and included a small box of sunmaid raisins – those are pretty cheap if you buy a pack of those small boxes – and we also included baby keys from Toys R Us.

you’ve gotten some fantastic ideas! another not too expensive idea – one of our volunteers takes large Popsicle sticks and soaks them in sugar free apple juice. after they’re dry she pokes some holes and makes a toy with sisal and the sticks.

apple twigs are also something inexpensive if you can find a friend with an apple tree.

Thanks for the ideas, guys! I can’t wait to start my basket!
