I’m heartbroken. My boy shamus has been unwell and I am close to having to decide what to do for my bunny shamus who has leg paralysis. Yesterday morning at 9 Spencer my mini Rex was unwell he often has stasis so I treated it like I normally did and wasn’t too concerned because it’s a semi regular thing. But 24 hours later there was zero improvement he was in so much pain. I took him to the vet and they said they could do surgery because it was probably an impaction. I had to make the heart breaking decision to put him to sleep. He was in so much pain and going down hill so rapidly. But I feel horrible I’ve never lost a pet or had to make that decision and it was so sudden. I don’t know what to do I feel like I made a horrible decision I’m gutted. I miss him so much already I don’t know what to do from here. I’m scared to go home and see his empty cage. He was so sweet and such a good boy. I’m so sad I don’t have a bunny called Spencer anymore.

I’m very sorry for your loss. It is very hard to lose a bunny, especially so when you aren’t at all prepared for it. Sometimes the only merciful thing we can do is help the bun cross over painlessly.

Losing a pet is an inevitable yet gruesome part of having pets. The decision to have a pet pts is so very hard, but we are the guardians of our animals and we must make sure they don’t suffer. I’m sorry too you don’t have a bunny named Spencer anymore. In time I think you’ll know you made the right choice for him, but for a while now it will be very tough.

I’m sorry about your bun. You did all you could for him, and with him in pain and declining, you did the right thing by letting him go to Rainbow Bridge. Luna is my first bun as well, so I can only imagine the grief you must be feeling. A lot of members have made memorials of their buns (ie. photo albums, paintings), which has helped them grieve. Please feel free to share any pics or stories about your dear Spencer.

I’m very sorry about the loss of Spencer. That’s always a hard decision to make, but know that you relieved Spencer of pain and suffering. He knew that you loved him, and that you would always do what was best for him.

It’s an extremely hard decision, but just remember he’s in a much better place now, and he’s not in any more pain. It’s excruciatingly painful for you, but you relieved him from the suffering. He loved you and he knew that you loved him too, he’s waiting for you now over across the rainbow bridge.

Thanks everyone. It all happened so quickly, I’m still in shock. It’s hard to think that two days ago he was hopping around up to his normal mischief and now he’s gone.

He was so small when I got him. I was walking past a pet shop and saw him and thought he was too young to be there away from his Mum. Then I overheard a lady talking to the pet shop man saying ‘oh I want him for my three year old, I have a box outside he can live in.’
I knew such a little bun wouldn’t survive outside in winter. So when the lady went to get money out I went in and bought the tiny bunny before she could.
He was so small and thin. He spend the first few days at home snuggled up to a wheatpack or sitting in his food bowl.

He quickly grew into such a spunky dude with so much attitude and so much love.

It’s wonderful you saved him and gave him a life where he could develop into and become his spunky self. There isn’t anything I can add to what the others have said. I’m just sorry you are going through this. As bam said it’s part of having a pet, the inevitable part, the very terrible part. It will be rough for a while but you will make it through. My thoughts are with you.

Honestly I don’t even feel human at the moment. Peach seems to be okay but she is spending almost all her time alone because I’m gone from 7am until 6 pm. My heart hurts for her. I keep expecting to see Spencer’s little face when ever i go in their room
