Today I noticed that Shmoo has a small bump on his nose probably where the muscle connects to the bone but slightly to one side. Its small, round and can be felt but not seen. It does not seem that he is in pain because of it (even when i touch it) and his nose is still “active” but I’m not sure what it is. My guess it might be an injury of he stuck his nose thru the bars a bit too much or hit something when doing binkys…other option is that his evil non-spayed girlfriend slapped him.

Any ideas what it might be ? I will call my vet tomorrow but if it is just a bump then nothing much he can do but let it heal…still I’m worried it might be something more serious because I’m not sure.

It’s really hard for any of us to tell from a description. You’re doing the right thing calling the vet. It could also be a bug bite.

I would definitely call your vet about it- if it is abnormal it could be the start of a bigger problem like an abscess and better to treat it now than later.

I called my vet and described it as best I could and she said that I should just observe for the time being and call again if it gets bigger or the normal (stop eating and pooping).

The bump feels like a small inflammation from a mosquito bite on a human. Not sure if I can describe it in more detail (plus it is covered with fur).

Your vet’s advice makes sense, but you might want to call her tomorrow and ask for a phone number of who to call if it worsens over the weekend. Good to have a weekend backup number anyway, so this is a good excuse to get one.

I inspected the bump today as best I could since the fur there is packed really dense but as far as I could see there is no discoloration of the skin below – all normal pinkish and it feels like its smaller today. As far as I’m aware discoloration to red to black would indicate abscess correct?

Ill keep checking it but at the moment I’m guessing that its either him hurting his nose sticking it thru the cage or him being happy doing binky’s like a mad bunny and bumping into something.

You might not see any discoloration of skin until it is ready to rupture (if it is an abscess).
