› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › A bit disapointing.. update regarding Faline
The breeder contacted me this morning about Faline, she wanted to talk to me about her personality.. previously she has been very outgoing and curious, that has changed to her wanting to be independant, having little interest in being held to the point of being frightened. The woman who is aiding us with her transport witnessed the same behavior and we have decided it would be better to not get her, she had two female (We wanted a girl) litter mates, a REW and a broken orange girl. the rew is very relaxed and the broken was happy as a clam being held, even had motherly behavior over the other rabbits. We have chosen the orange girl. Her trip home will be starting very soon and we will pick her up an hour away tomorrow night. Of course as soon as she makes her way home i will post photos of her. I do have one of our new girl and will post that later on
Im having mixed emotions right now as i was very eager to finally get Faline and reallly had my heart set on who i thought she was going to be… things happen but im very greatful for the breeders honesty and glad she was so willing to help us select the right bun’ for our family.

you do realize that their personality will continue to change thruout the entire 1st year or so, even after altering? it’s impossible to determine personality and temperament in a baby bunny. that’s like looking at your human children at age 2 and trying to figure out 100% what type of person they will be at 18 years old. you cannot do it. personally, i would contact her back and go with your original choice. she’s who you have your heart set on… and you’ll love her regardless of what her final personality is.
I agree with Beka.
also, what happens if you get the second bunny, and then she changes personality again (which she will)? you’re going to be forever second guessing your decision, and i’m afraid you will regret getting her.
Beka, i thought that was true too, especially considering shes only 10wks old… and I wouldve said the same thing except “Faline” would cower herself against the back of the cage, scratching, squirming, exc trying to get away when being held. I did have my heart set on her in the beginning but truth of the matter is I never got to meet her. The woman has already left the breeder and is on her way south (6hr drive south to her residence, then one more hour south to come to me) I will be happy with this rabbit im sure, but like you said i already did have my heart set on the other female, the sad truth is i wasnt able to meet them all in person. I would love her regardless of her final personality but the truth with that is we cannot trust just any animal with our children and were coming more and more aware of just how lucky we are that Rain is the way she is. If she became a withdrawn rabbit who hated being held it would be very difficult for our family to become close to her. I know their personalities change, hopefully our final decision will prove to be the best one (eek) sadly only time will determine that.
I sure hope we didnt make the wrong choice!
well, we wish you guys the very best of course! i know you’ll keep us updated… as you know, rabbits are really not pets FOR children, so regardless of the personaility, they have to be supervised all the time. i know this first-hand having had 3 house rabbits around my 5yo son.
not that it matters now, but i wonder if the change in personality could have been due to being afraid after getting the ear tattoo. bunnies can have very LOOONG memories sometimes, maybe she was associating the breeder with the tattoo? that would make me a bit nervous for awhile too…
Oh, poor Adee! So sorry to hear of the disappointment, and I hope all works out well… I know you’ll do the best you can to make a happy human/bunny family!
Thanks lightchick.. i hope it all works out too. Tomorrow I will let you know how thing go.
Beka, thanks for your comments. I do know rabbits are not a childrens pet but in our family they are as much a pet as a dog would be. They are always supervised of course but Rain is loved on just as much by my children as she is by my husband and i. It couldve been in result of her tattoo being done but honestly will we ever know? In the meantime the new girl also had a tattoo done (As did her litter mate) and we will see how she is for ourselves in just over 24hrs.
thanks guys (and gals, you know what i mean
)
can you post the other pic of the new bunny then? i don’t remember what she looked like.
Well, I’m sorry…but congrats at the same time! Are you going to choose a different name or are you still going with Faline?
i think the bunnys personality depends on the owner, i mean of course to some extent some like to play more than others and some like to be cuddled but no bun is scared of someone if they are being looked after properly, probably she just reached maturity or is about to and therefore hormones are kicking in, i cant see how having another bun would be better because that one is only going to turn out the same with the same care as the other, and you were already set on getting that bun and had a name picked out and everything. Of course its up to you but all buns go through that stage before getting neutered, my two did aswell and you have to expect it.
I’m sure you’ve made the best decision under the circumstances. You’re right – you never had a chance to meet her, and the breeder has an idea of what you wanted. It’s possible that something specific happened to cause this frightened reaction, and also possible the breeder doesn’t want to go into detail so is just describing the outcome in her behavior. Or she’s getting sick, in which case the breeder will continue to assume the responsibility for her care. Whatever its cause, it’s enough of a concern to be doing what you are doing. I’m sure the breeder will find her a suitable home and get her what she needs now.
And I guarantee that once you have YOUR bunny in the house, you will be so excited and happy with her that all else won’t matter after all!
baby pic of her (she was actually my first pic when i saw her pictures, we later learned about faline)
more recent pics
Thanks for the positive comments Pam, the breeder did say this is something new that has just happened, be she saw a raccoon on the property or what not. It couldnt be hormones as shes only a baby, about 10wks (DOB:6-1-08) Im sure once shes in our arms everything will be “better” and we will fall in love with her.
We are not keeping the name Faline, in fact were debating the name Lucy for her… we wont make her name 100% until we meet her though.
whoa, WOW, those bunnies are gorgeous! those ears! I bet you couldn’t sneak a snack past them if you were 3 states away!
She’s very pretty. She doesn’t strike me as a Lucy, though. Pumpkin sprung to mind, something Autumn that goes with Rain. Squash maybe.
(Or maybe I’m just ready for supper LOL.)
Oh, that picture of her sitting up with her ears drooping down…!!!! EEeek, too cute! I wouldn’t ever be able to say no to a critter that looked at me like that!
I thought about doing a name that goes with rain but that seems kinda silly now.. i used to have pet rats and all their names went together hahaha. The woman who is helping transport her thought of the name Lucy.. we will see though when she gets here, in the meantime were brainstorming names hahaha..
and yeah, i would say shes well fed hahaha, shes TWICE the size of Rain already and shes younger by at least a month! Apparently her ears are as big as they look too hahaha, cant wait till tomorrow night!
hahahahahahahahaha that was awesome!! didnt even think of that when i saw the photo, good one’ and here i thought she was all angelic with her hands folded, boy does she have my fooled
Oh, gorgeous! The white one is cool looking too.
hubby doesnt like red/pink eyes so she was eliminated pretty quickly..
What about Dixie? The girl fox in The Fox and the Hound? She’s kind of a fox like color.
naw… everything in our town is called dixie, its so played out, is that the name of the girl on fox and the hound? i never noticed she had a name hahahaha I love bambi but he was a boy, we already took the name faline.. i love how fawn looking she is even down to her white spots lol
Hmmm…Blossom? Daisy? Petunia? Saffron?
Thanks!! Keep them coming, we wont be able to make our final choice until we see her… see what fits her little personality
Saffron thats so cute!
Sherbert, Carrot, ummmm, Dumbo?lol jk, (no offence I do love the ears), Suki? Well Have fun and Enjoy her make sure you put more picks up when you get her though
omg of COURSE i will post pictures of her when she gets here!!!! thats a give-in lol. I also joked with my DH about naming her dumbo hahahaha
yea that was the first thing to pop up in my head. lol
She is adorable!! I think a flower or some kind of nature name would fit her. Mother Nature? Haha jk! Well anyways good luck!! (her ears look the same size as rain! I love it!!)
lol… her ears look freakin’ huge! I hate the way the breeders do that standard “breed photos” I think pics with their ears to the side or even in front make them look ridiculous. Im going to call the family who is helping with her transport tonight and see how shes doing. From what she told me earlier she is just as sweet as pie and doesnt mind being held at all!
You’ll have to pin her ears back … Holy what hugeemungus ears … she will be falling over those.
those big cute ears are sooo gorgeous!
I’m so sorry to hear that you won’t be bringing home Faline after all. Gosh she was beautiful!
But this little lady is sure adorable too! Wow, I’d have had a hard time choosing just one of any of those, honestly.
What will happen to Faline now? Does the breeder have another home lined up?
lolz….right now I’m typing this over a bowl of Kashi…you know, the puffy rice cereal? It looks all orange and white. ^_^
Too bad she’s not a he, I’m thinking of little Oliver-the orange/white tabby kitten from “Oliver & Company”.
i loved the movie oliver!! what were the other members in that movie (charectors?)
everything happens for a reason and im glad we got the bun we ended up with! Shes wonderful, her and Rain are getting along wonderfully and shes so sweet, Faline was very reserved and didnt like being held at all. Motherly was the perfect word used for our new girl, thats what the breeder told me when she was explaining their behaviors… Faline is going with her REW sister to another breeder who does showing.. not the ending I wouldve hoped for Faline or her sister but knowing our girl is getting a safe forever home from the show world and from breeding is comforting.. if i couldve taken them all i would have.
I cant get over how unattractive those photos the breeder took makes her look.. i think shes much prettier in person and looks much better in my pics
hahaha
I bet.
Beautiful! I think you did really luck out with Rain as MOST bunnies, especially once they reach sexual maturity, do not enjoy being held. They may tolerate it, but as prey animals, they prefer all four on the floor. Even if this beautiful bunny does end up not being much of a lap bunny or likes being held, you can still find great ways to bond with her on her level. I know that actually my own bunnies have taught me to just sit down and relax with them. It actually ends up being a wonderful relaxing break. I grab a couple of pillows and join them on the floor.
everything happens for a reason and Abbie has showed us that selecting her was a blessing in disguise.. once you get Abbie in your arms she relaxes right away and actually likes being held more then Rain! Rain really is a one of a kind bun’ im sure, her loving playtime the way she does, the way she interacts with us and even her level of toleration during being picked up amazes me everytime. she would let you pick her up by her underarms like a puppy if you let her! I love my buns!
I dont know if Rain is as tollerant because my boys, husband and i spend so much time with her or if shes just a special rabbit but boy did we get lucky, especially considering shes a dreaded “petstore” bun… best thing we ever did was select her! I know it wouldve been better to go through a rescue but knowing Rain and what we wouldve missed out on.. no way do i regret it
