Hello! We are adopting an 8 week old lop. I’ve never cared for such a young bun! I’m not sure what/how much to feed him and how/when to transition him to more food/adult food and hay. The internet is full of conflicting information. Can you please provide some assistance?  Thanks so much!!

“Unlimited” alfalfa-based, good-quality pellets and unlimited alfalfa hay … is the recommended diet for young rabbits until about 6mo, though some begin transitioning to an adult diet earlier/later (it is not an exact science; what’s most important is the dense alfalfa nutrition early on to ensure healthy growth).

I say “unlimited” pellets because it is generally used synonymously with “a lot”– if the young rabbit is eating 0 hay because they always have pellets, then you can limit how long the pellet bowl is out for or cap the amount of pellets per day (but not as much as an adult rabbit).

Thank you. What about treats? Green veggies? Non-green veggies? At what point can I introduce those to a bunny and about how much?

You can actually do unlimited timothy hay rather than alfalfa hay as long as you also provide alfalfa pellets. It’s often easier to transition buns to timothy when they have had it from a young age, and as long as they get alfalfa in the pellets they don’t need two sources.

No treats or veggies for now. Veggies can be very gradually introduced at around 12 weeks.
