Hi everyone, I have an 8 week(almost 9) Holland Lop named Petunia. She has been on unlimited hay and pellets given from the breeder- I was speaking with a rabbit specialist and she advised that I can start introducing veggies- has anyone does this before? I read 12 weeks so I’m a bit early. She’s a pretty big bunny for 8 weeks and has a very good appetite. So far we have tried spinach(not a huge fan) and dill(loves it) and last night we tried a small piece of kale. I’m regretting it now because I think I should have just waited but I was so excited to have her and I wanted to spoil her and now I am worried I am going to hurt her little tummy. How often should a bunny be eating? I haven’t seen her eat for the last hour- I am so scared! She did eat this morning when i returned her to her litter box and ate some hay. She is stretched out comfortably by her water bowl where she has been napping for what feels like the last hour and a half( I am watching her on the nanny cam) so she looks comfortable……should she be eating every 20 minutes? I took the left over spinach away that she didn’t eat and refilled her hay. I am reading different things about pellets. She weaned from mom at 6 weeks and went home at 7.5(got her on the Saturday and she turned 8 weeks on the Monday) so really she should be okay.

She seems to be very comfortable in her new home- she is actually quite fearless and not skittish at all compared to the last baby I had 2 years ago. I am a very paranoid mom- can someone please help ease my mind! I will feel better when I see her eat or poop on the nanny cam but I haven’t seen that yet and usually I do but she certainly looks comfortable napping with back feet kicked all the way out.

Should I halt all veggies for a few weeks?

We have a vet visit valentines day!

        Thanks!

UPDATE: Petunia had a bite to eat- phew- still should I stop feeing her veggies and treats? She loves these banana treats( I was using this to bond with her so she would let me pick her up and handle her which has worked WONDERS)

General rule is veggies between 3-4 months and fruit at 6. As a bun that has had tummy troubles, I really do think that’s best. They need their gut flora to properly develop. You also want to make sure her diet isn’t too rich, making her produce excess cecals. So I’d wait.

Okay I will stop giving her the veggies- thanks!

@Manda I’m so impressed, how did you use treats to get your bunny used to being picked up?! I’d love to manage that with mine.

Also this might be controversial but my bun is 4 months and he has one small portion of different veg each day (a few stems broccoli, some dill or cilantro, kale, red chard etc). He also has very small pieces of fruit (apple, dried papaya, carrot since it’s higher in sugar) as an occasional treat. He is healthy and doesn’t leave any cecals behind. I would still wait until she is at least 3 months, though.

& Finally, deep breath!! Haha. I can completely relate because I’m also quite a new bunny owner. What you are describing back there is a typical bunny day

I would hold off on veggies and fruits until she’s at least 4 months old. That’ll give her time for her tummy to develop a little more and it’ll give her time to really develop good hay eating habits. I’d also stop the treats tbh. I understand you want to bond, but a bun that young should not have anything rich. Hay and pellets is perfect for an 8 week old bun.

Oh, and no they don’t need to eat every 20 minutes lol, relax

I really think it depends. My very experienced bunny vet always tells me to get them started on a variety of vegetables as soon as possible, because it’s good for their developing gut. I have done this with all of my baby buns, and they’ve never had any issues with it. I still introduce slowly – so just romaine for a week, then romaine and a bit of kale, then romaine, kale, coriander… etc. But advice differs and I definitely wouldn’t panic over feeding her a small bit of veg.

Some bunnies do have adverse reactions, but it does depend on the bunny.

Veggie feeding is reactive, so if you feel the need to, do so in small quantities; however, if there are any signs of gastric distress, stop and wait for another time.

Wick had bits of romaine lettuce every day starting at 9 weeks old because he had to consume probiotic with his antibiotic treatment. He was fine throughout. (strictly romaine lettuce only)
