        hi all,

so we usually order from Small Pet Select for our timothy hay, and it’s around $75 for 60 lb. But actually I’ve just looked on Dr Foster and Smith and they have all of their oxbow hay on sale… you can get a 50 lb box of timothy for $53 and free shipping. I’ve never really bought oxbow in bulk, I figure the quality will go down a little bit as it does with all bigger quantities. Has anyone bought a big quantity from oxbow? If so, how was the hay? I’m concerned because I’ve never bought it before and don’t want to spend that much and end up not impressed. Also, if that would happen, can you still contact oxbow for a refund (or another box?) even though you bought it through another website? Thanks in advance!!

I’ve bought a few 50lbs boxes of oxbow orchard – the last box I had was terrible, really dusty but this current box I’ve got is excellent so it really depends. I think you can return it to any place you purchase from

thanks for the quick repsonse sarah!! yeah I guess it’s sort of hit or miss with any hay you purchase online, it’s really too bad that I don’t have any local farmers near me with good quality hay, it would sure save me a lot of money! but I do feel better with oxbow knowing exactly what type of hay it is, whereas sometimes with local there’s other stuff mixed in. I’ve just ordered it so I hope I end up with a good box! Also good to know I can always return or exchange. I’m going to check out oxbow’s website to see, but if I do return, do they provide a shipping label?? if you don’t know it’s totally fine. I just want to make sure I don’t get stuck having to pay for shipping for something that heavy hahah

I’ve not ever returned a box but I would imagine if you want to return it as it would essentially be faulty (really dusty or something) I would assume that they would pay the shipping

Farm hay would be so much cheaper. Unfortunately my rabbits never liked any hay I got from a farm ?

Ditto. I can get free hay from the stable where I board. But my bunnies have always insisted I buy the $40 bag from Oxbow.

I think that it would be Drs. Foster and Smith who would refund your money, if you bought the hay from them and you weren’t satisfied. I just checked their return policy and they charge $7.99 for returns. There is a place for you to print a label then you take it to UPS. They deduct the $7.99 from your refund. https://www.drsfostersmith.com/general.cfm?gid=316#3

Of course, if the product was defective, or if the hay was moldy or something, I think that they would just refund your money all together. I buy almost all of my food and supplies there. This year I ordered a couple of bowls and one arrived broken even though it was in bubble wrap. I called them and they replaced the bowl, telling me to discard the broken one. The hay I’ve gotten from there has always been fresh but there are always some bags that are better than others. That’s just the nature of hay. I’ve never bought any 50 pound bags.

just a little update for you guys – the big box of hay arrived yesterday! I was happy that I was home and it was not raining at the moment. it was sorta entertaining to see the UPS driver carry a 50 lb box all the way up my driveway (in my head I was thinking, where in the world is the cart??)

anyway, I opened it up right away and first thing I noticed, great aroma!! fresh and grassy and a great smell (for rabbit owners at least) just the top few layers look like great quality – a bit stalk-ier than the Small Pet Select second cut but I’m hoping it will be good for the boys to have some thicker pieces for their teeth as well. so overall I am happy with my order! if you can go through a 50 lb box within a couple of months I suggest picking one of these bad boys up, a great bargain!! I’m gonna attach some photos because If I didn’t I would just be a weirdo taking pictures of a giant box of grass lol.  obviously you cannot tell color from the photos but it’s very nice and green. also a plus that it’s in a breathable plastic bag.

That does look good! I’ve had one box of Timothy from Oxbow and it was fantastic quality (I realise I only mentioned my experience with Orchard and not the Timothy) I ended up donating it because my rabbits started just eating the seed heads lol but I do remember it being very green and not at all dusty.
