My bun is a house rabbit and doesn’t live in a cage. It’s now 5am and about 30 minutes ago I woke up to a huge bang and the sound of my bunny’s  bowl, I ran in to check him and his bowl of food was all over and he was layed on the floor not moving I touched him and he didn’t move at all, I picked him up he was completely floppy, then he started to try to run but was flopping side to side like he couldn’t find his footing I picked him up again and wrapped him in a blanket to cuddle him and he just stopped moving all together, closed his eyes and I’m pretty sure he’s passed away! I’m absolutely devastated we love him so much in his short time with our family I really don’t know what’s happened 🥺 has anyone had anything like this happen before?

p.s. I did just separate him and his brother due to them starting to fight, chasing, running in circles and pulling hair out, they are due to be neutered but lockdown has delayed it until January which is why they where separated to prevent a full fight could this have anything to do with it? He was fine before I went to bed he was sat with me eating his food getting cuddles in my bed 😟

I’m very sorry your bun died. It’s very difficult to guess what caused his death. I very much doubt it had to do with the fight he had with his brother.

Rabbits sometimes seize when they die. It doesn’t give any good clues about any particular cause of death. The rabbit disease RVHD can cause seizures, but many other things can too, for example e cuniculi or acute heart failure or a vascular stroke (which is rare but does occur).

Does your other rabbit seem healthy? Its good if you can give him extra attention now when he has lost his brother.

I’m sorry for your loss. I agree with Bam, it’s difficult to know what happened. Since he is so young though, it would suggest there was something wrong with him. Perhaps he had a congenital defect of some sort.

Thank you for your replies, around 2 months ago he stopped eating so we took him to the vets he had some injections and picked back up but has always been on the skinny side compared to his brother so maybe that has something to do with it, just so heartbreaking with his age and circumstances 😟 we’ve got our other bun in our room tonight as he’s been a bit quiet even though they fell out we kept them near each other so they still had the company, we’re looking into getting him a neutered female once he’s been fixed I feel so awful for him ❤️

So sorry for your loss. It’s so hard to know what happened in cases like this, and I know that only makes it rougher, especially since it was sudden and he was still so young. As others have said he probably had some existing health issue that was hiding, try not to play the blame yourself game. It is good you were able to be there with him his last moments, I am sure he appreciated it.

Only thing I would recommend is if you can maybe getting his brother a good health check to make sure it was nothing genetic that could also strike him, also this would rule out anything contagious. That and give him some extra love which I am sure you already are.

                Again sorry.
