        Hi all!

I’m so happy to say our Teddy is still with us and will turn 12 next month!  🙂  He just had a brief stasis issue for a few days but seems to be bouncing back, knock on wood. A few things have come to my attention while caring for him, and I’d love your help:

        1) Oats for weight gain: he’s never had much body fat, but he feels even skinnier now.  We’d been giving a pinch of alfalfa hay over his regular hay, but I think we need to do more to help him get his weight up now.  He’s quite sensitive to sugars, but we just introduced rolled oats and he loves them!  How much can we safely give without introducing problems?  He’s only 3.5 pounds / 1.5 kg.

        2) Keeping him warm enough: Probably related to being so skinny (and older), he seems to get chilly more easily.  His room is kept warmish (high 60s, low 70s) but he still gets a little cold sometimes (and not just during stasis).  Has anyone had luck with, like, the weight-activated heated cat beds, or other kinds of warming beds for bunnies?  He also has spondylosis and might find heat comforting.  He’s historically been pretty skeptical/indifferent to beds, but I got some simple fleece ones (like a simple cat bed) just recently that he’s actually accepted.

        3) We’ve finally started giving just a little squirt of Benebac gel (one of those little tubes lasts us a week or 10 days) semi-regularly, and I think we need to step this up.  Can we give a little daily, or what do you think is best?

Thank you so much!  We’re lucky that Teddy’s pretty happy on the whole, but I’d love to learn how to do these parts better for him.

Awww Teddy <3  He and Bun Jovi can be grandpas together.

As for the oats, I’m not sure about the amount exactly, but I know oat groats are given pretty regularly. At the shelter when a bun comes in very underweight we usually add about a teaspoon to their pellet ration. So maybe start with a 1/2 teaspoon and see how he does?  Does he like critical care (or other recovery foods)? A lot of vets will recommend that to help seniors with their weight.

There are these warming disks that we also use at the shelter, called “snuggle safe” that you warm up in the microwave and can offer to the bun. I think that would be safer than something electrical because you wouldn’t risk it short circuiting or him nibbling wires.

I’m not sure about Benebac frequency, so I’ll let someone else chime in on that!

It’s so lovely to hear about Teddy!

My Vilde (who rather is Teddy’s doppelganger!) gets 1-2 table spoons of rolled oats per day. He rarely finishes them, but its there if he wants it. He is a hard keeper, but rolled oats help and havent messed with his tummy so far. You can also give a tiny amount of sunflower seeds, preferably the black and white striped ones (the husks have good oils!), but if you cant find those, kernel will do fine.

M Vilde likes lounging next to the radiator during the day. He gets meloxicam daily, which I think helps with any age-related stiffness, because he’s very agile and moves around a lot (and at full speed) during his waking hours. I havent tried any other heat source, but I have a hot water bottle in case he’ll want an extra external heat source. He likes to sleep at the foot end of my bed at night.

I use a probiotic for Vilde. We dont get Benebac here, but the one I have, has some of the bacteria also found in Benebac. It’s never risky to give a probiotic , according to Molly Varga (author of the 2nd edition of the Textbook of Rabbit Mediccine). The worst thing that can happen is that it  has no effect. Any surplus just gets pooped out. I personally think it probiotics are especially useful for rabbits who for some reason have difficulty keeping weight on. The good bacteria work together with the other beneficial gut microbes to extract all the important nutrients from the food.

Ohhh thank you both so much!!  🙂 🙂   I remember thinking the same about Vilde — how much they look alike — and I remember loving to hear about how Bun Jovi is a wild man even at 12.  🙂 🙂

This is so helpful!  Teddy hates Critical Care, unfortunately, but it’s great to know that Vilde does well on rolled oats, and I’ll experiment with sesame seeds too!  🙂   And that’s helpful to know about the probiotics.  I think I’ll just start giving a little bit daily.  He’s picky but will eat most things if they’re covered in simethicone! ;D  He’s been getting twice-daily meloxicam (with famotidine for tummy protection) and cisapride for a while, but with the help of simethicone he’ll lick them off a plate — as Kate/Jerseygirl says, he is a doll about that.  😀

Teddy also likes hanging out by the heat vent when it’s on, and we have a little space heater on the other side of the room, but so far he hasn’t gone for heating pads… I’ll experiment with the microwavable kind, thanks for that suggestion!

Thank you so much again!  🙂

Bun Jovi is certainly still a wild man! Maybe not as many binkies and he’s less interested in climbing these days, but he still runs around a lot! And he definitely loves his naps and snuggles.

I think you meant to say sunflower seeds, not sesame. 🙂

I was always told about a tablespoon for oats, but I suppose it depends on the size of the rabbit too.

Wonderful, thank you both so much!  🙂  And yes, DanaNM, I did mean sunflower seeds, sorry about that.  Love to Bun Jovi!  🙂
