I’m going to be building some shelves to hold some rabbit and guinea pig stuff. I was going to build it out of 2x4s (not pressure treated, just the normal whitewood stud type from Lowes/Home Depot).

When I let my rabbits out, they will have access to this and I’m sure they are going to chew on it. I just wanted to make sure that if they chew on this, it’s not poisonous or will make them sick. I don’t think it would, but couldn’t find a definitive answer, so some help would be great.

It would be fine. Lumber from these stores for building projects is usually pine and also kiln dried.

When you say whitewood, do you mean primed? Or just plain untreated timber? Untreated pine timber is safe for rabbits

A general FYI for anyone seeing whitewood at hardware stores. Whitewood is usually spruce, pine, or fir. The exact species is subject to change, and it’s generally based on price and availability.  This one threw me for a loop when I first saw it because I had never heard of a “Whitewood” tree.

I agree with the others – just make sure to specify that the wood should be plain and untreated when you go to buy it. You know what, maybe I should think about getting a plain-wood thingie to hold rabbit supplies on if I can find a place in my tiny apartment for it. I’ve got everything stored in spare litterboxes right now perched on the lid of the hay bin.

I mean untreated lumber you find at HD or Lowes, usually used as studs
