So I just brought home a new I guess you can say baby rabbit since it’s still too young to get fixed today. I already have another young rabbit who just turned 9 weeks and I was told it was a female during her first vet visit. My new one might be too young to tell for sure if it’s a male or female but the family I got it from thinks it’s a boy. Right now their both in their own cages that are situated next to close to each other. I’ve been reading about bonding and have read some of the posts here but I’d still like some advice about how to go about future bonding. My 9 week old is obviously still too young to get spayed so until then, I can’t have any bonding moments right? And of course I need to get the other one fixed when the time comes too so do I keep them completely separated with no interaction here and there until both can get fixed or could I somehow let them slowly interact for say 5 min so that they at least “know” each other? Or will just having them live near each other be okay and just have separate exercise/playtime everyday.

They need to remain separate at all times until 1-2 months after your girl gets spayed, which means you have another 5-6 months of waiting before that can happen. You can prebond until their first bonding session by swapping their items between the cages and swapping them between cages (let her settle in for a month first before doing this). You can also keep their cages next to each other, but not too near that they can touch because bunnies can fight and mate through bars.

No, you can’t have any bonding or “play dates” until both of the rabbits are fixed. Hormones can be unpredictable and rabbit fights can end up really bad in just a few seconds.

            1. Keep both separate until both are spayed/neutered.

            2. You can do some prebonding, such as switching their toys/blankets into each other’s pens so they can get used to the scent of the other rabbit.

            3. You’ll need to wait about a month after their spay/neuter to let them recover and let hormones dissipate.

            4. After at least one month of recovery and prebonding you can attempt to bond them face-to-face in NEUTRAL space that neither of them have been in. Most people start in the bathroom.

It’s hard to give advice on the actual bonding until you begin. Because every pair is different, the same approach doesn’t work for every pair. But once you do start bonding you can start a journal and get advice.

            Best of luck
