I was wondering what the difference is in time/money when caring for three buns instead of two. I might have the opportunity to take in a very sweet rescue bun, but wanted to know whether it would make an enormous difference in terms of budget/etc.

I have 3 buns, 2 young babies, and 1 adult, in terms of budget, I don’t think its that much more really, I haven’t had all 3 of them really long, but, I don’t think it will be that much more. Time wise… ehhh, it depends, are any of your buns bonded? none of mine are so I have 3 cages to clean in the morning, verses 2, takes me about 20 minutes a cage… depending on mess. and then play time for each bun twice a day too. Oreo my adult bun gets more play time than the 2 babies, just because they have a lot more room in comparison to Oreo in the cages. I guess it would depend on how demanding your life is, I stay home all day, and work nights and weekends part time, so I have quite a bit of time on my hands, I also have a very strict schedule when it comes to play time, and feeding time. Good Luck with your decision!!!

I had three bunnies longer than I have had just two, but for me because most of the time the were not a bonded trio and that made a big difference when it came to time and work. If you were able to successful create a bonded trio, that can make things much easier.

I also had to deal with poop wars – again, only if the trio is not bonded, and then the separate exercise times out. It could all get a bit tedious but I was so used to it. It was only when I was down to one bonded pair that I realized how much more time I had to spend with them, and how much more freedom they received = and how much more time and freedom I had too!

The other thing was vet expense. Two of the bunnies happened to need regular medical care as one (Rucy) had teeth issues, and the other one (Bailey) developed symptoms from e.cuniculi. Having several can just raise your chances that vet care will be needed.

As far as day to day expenses though, I really didn’t notice a huge difference. Obviously more food and litter, but it wasn’t a major drastic financial difference from two to three.

I also work from home, but my schedule is pretty much non-stop, so I like 2crazybuns said, it really depends on your schedule and how much time you have, and how much free time you want to give to this.

Many people do just fine with the demands of time that more bunnies require – it’s something that they love to do and brings them joy, so it may not feel like work at all.

If the bunnies are not bonded and you have 3 separate bunnies that cuts down on the free time that they have out of their cages/pens when you have them on a rotating schedule.

The daily expenses of veggies, pellets and hay was not a drastic increase when I added my 3rd bunny- but it was a huge difference in my time with them.  Now that I have had 3 separate bunnies- and now only have 2- I would not want to go back to having 3 separate.  Cotton and Schroeder although not bonded can happily co-exist beside each other with no poo/pee wars or biting or boxing.  That is such a huge relief from the tension that Penny had obviously when she got near their pens- she would get them riled up and they would be upset with her and then also project that tension onto each other.

So even though I miss Penny dearly and would not have traded the her for the convenience that I have now with Cotton and Schroeder- it has opened my eyes to how much easier it is when there is not outright negative vibes from one of the buns towards the other rabbits.  So I am not going to get a 3rd bunny again anytime soon.
